If you could go back in time, would you give your children different names?

I’d be more adventurous I think.
My dc have lovely traditional names but if I could change them I probably would ( way too late though as they’re teenagers Grin )

How about you?

No. My DC are I their 20s & I still love their names.

Idontmeanto · 21/10/2018 15:20

Both my daughters names have become popular, (I was a trendsetter though! Dd1 name made the top 100 when she was 10 and is still there, dd2 is now 15 and hers has gone from bloody nowhere to top 500 this year and I assume it will increase in popularity for a while yet.)
I do feel a bit sad about that and might have chosen differently with hindsight.

StarShapedWindow · 21/10/2018 15:21

No I love my children’s names. I’d like another girl so I can use the name Petra

I love Ds names, but I really wanted to call him Barnaby. My surname starts with a B, and I was worried people would think we were mega posh and that I was also slightly bananas. I wish I had just gone for it now though, Barnaby B would have been a cool name for him!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 21/10/2018 15:22

I’d definitely keep one, it’s still my favourite boys name. One I’d probably change though.

CwtchesAreTheBest · 21/10/2018 15:24

No. I had strong reasons for picking their names and have no regrets.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 21/10/2018 15:44

I named DS after DH's late dad, to much disapproval from my mum. It's not my favourite name, but it's a classic and a saint's name and now quite unusual in kids, so it's worked out well. DH is still so happy we used the name, so it was worth it for that

Greyhound22 · 21/10/2018 15:46

DS is 4 and I still love his name. He couldn't be anything else.

Fishandthechips · 21/10/2018 16:05

I would probably stick to my guns on my sons name which I liked the nickname for, dh didnt like the full version but liked the nickname. We compromised and he has a very similar name which shares the nickname. Think the difference between Isabelle and Isabella. Still wished I'd used the version I liked the best.
No regrets with dd. Love her name.

Muddlingalongalone · 21/10/2018 16:08

I love dd2's name but had no idea of It's popularity & know she'll be in a class with another 1 when she starts school. I would probably have used her middle name instead if I'd realised which I love equally.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/10/2018 16:08

I love my DC names (and they do too , honest !)

My DS went through school with only 1-2 other boys the same name as him, at most , in the whole school.

DD name is now very popular but she loves it.

I was at a Parents Evening and one of the Mums called to her DS "Josh" , I did think for a nano second "Hmm if I'd called DS 'Josh' " .....

stonesandsticks · 21/10/2018 16:08

I still love the names I chose, but sometimes think if I had another child now (not likely) I would choose something a bit less 'safe'. Not an odd name, just one of the many names I really like but decided against in case people thought we were odd. Having said that, I suspect that if I used some of them I might now have teens demanding to know why I didn't give them a normal name!

missmouse101 · 21/10/2018 16:09

Yes, I'd definitely change my daughter's name, maybe to Bryony, Esme, Emerald or Iolanthe.

SoyDora · 21/10/2018 16:09

No, I still love their names. In fact I think I love them more as time passes because the name becomes more ‘them’ IYSWIM?

AlbertWinestein · 21/10/2018 16:11

redwine I really wanted to call my dinner Barnaby too! He’s now 14 and it was top of my names list. I was sat at the maternity clinic and two women were chatting and both said they were thinking Barnaby/Barney so it got chucked off the list.

FluffyMcCloud · 21/10/2018 16:12

I adore my kids names. My eldest son’s name has become super popular but I still love it. The others are less so and my daughters name is, quite simply, the best name you can give a girl. So Nope, wouldn’t change any!

AlbertWinestein · 21/10/2018 16:12

Wtf?!!! My dinner?!!! My DS obviously!

surferjet · 21/10/2018 16:21

AlbertWinestein
Great typo Grin

No but if I was having a baby today my choices would be different

redwineandcrisps · 21/10/2018 16:32

Ha! Sod getting a dog and calling it Barnaby, I’m naming my dinner now too Grin

Babybearsporij · 21/10/2018 16:33

No, I wouldn't. I love my DC names, they're perfect.

AviatorShades · 21/10/2018 16:36

Now I'm going to start naming my dinners. In the US Charles is sometimes called Chip, btw, so that's a good start. Always popular too Grin

MrsPear · 21/10/2018 16:37

If I am honest I would give ds1 a more English ie less foreign middle name like ds2 and combine my surname with h’s. I really worry about racism now and there cvs being dismissed. At least if I had combined names they would have had an option to present as fully British.

fussychica · 21/10/2018 16:38

DS 25 no regrets, love his name as much now as we did then. It's a traditional, timeless name which goes well with his surname.
Only one of the names on our potential names list would have been "of the time", glad we steered away from that one!

motortroll · 21/10/2018 16:38

I love my kids names. Traditional but uncommon. I just need 5 more kids so I can use the rest of my awesome name ideas!!
