"'I've hacked your email" email

yellowbana · 21/10/2018 12:47

Normally I don't pay any attention to these things whatsoever and I'm certain it's fake (there are a couple of news articles from June this year highlighting similar scam emails). I know that my email address was compromised a while ago (I used haveibeenpwned.com). The password they gave in the email to me is an old one I used, and the email appears to have come from my own email address - tried hovering over the sender, clicking reply etc and they all link back to my own email.

I'm not really sure what I'm looking for, just some reaffirmation that nothing bad is actually going to happen? And some advice on what I need to do now to secure accounts?

I've done an AVG deep scan, no threats have been found. The last time I ran a deep scan before this was probably 6 weeks ago, and it moved 1-2 times into quarantine, or whatever it's called.
Obviously changed my email password again, and any accounts associated with that email.
Anything else I need to do?

The email I received reads:
Hello!

My nickname in darknet is wye03.
I hacked this mailbox more than six months ago,
through it I infected your operating system with a virus (trojan) created by me and have been monitoring you for a long time.

So, your password from [email address] is [old password]

Even if you changed the password after that - it does not matter, my virus intercepted all the caching data on your computer
and automatically saved access for me.

I have access to all your accounts, social networks, email, browsing history.
Accordingly, I have the data of all your contacts, files from your computer, photos and videos.

I was most struck by the intimate content sites that you occasionally visit.
You have a very wild imagination, I tell you!

During your pastime and entertainment there, I took screenshot through the camera of your device, synchronizing with what you are watching.
Oh my god! You are so funny and excited!

I think that you do not want all your contacts to get these files, right?
If you are of the same opinion, then I think that $825 is quite a fair price to destroy the dirt I created.

Send the above amount on my BTC wallet (bitcoin): 1NXNt72qfMhPZDffUEqryCYpEUzyR6LmgH
As soon as the above amount is received, I guarantee that the data will be deleted, I do not need it.

Otherwise, these files and history of visiting sites will get all your contacts from your device.
Also, I'll send to everyone your contact access to your email and access logs, I have carefully saved it!

Since reading this letter you have 48 hours!
After your reading this message, I'll receive an automatic notification that you have seen the letter.

I hope I taught you a good lesson.
Do not be so nonchalant, please visit only to proven resources, and don't enter your passwords anywhere!
Good luck!

I had exactly the same email yesterday! As you say it freaked me out a bit as it had an old password in the message.

Myusername2015 · 21/10/2018 12:49

Although I had to pay €811 you must have more dodgy websites than me Grin

80sMum · 21/10/2018 12:50

I received an email like that. I deleted it. It's a scam.

I've had one with my password. I don't have a webcam or a PC nor have I masturbated to pornography on my 'phone. I just ignored it.

Caprisunorange · 21/10/2018 12:51

I found this in my spam box a few days ago but it’s weeks old and nothing’s happened!

BertramKibbler · 21/10/2018 12:51

There’s an article about this in the Daily Mail today

AnotherOriginalUsername · 21/10/2018 12:52

I had this. It had an old password as well (as in about 2+ years ago so there goes their 6 month theory) and AIBU on MN on a Friday night is probably about as risque as my phone use gets so....I call bullshit.

80sMum · 21/10/2018 12:52

Here's a link to some information about this scam

PetraDelphiki · 21/10/2018 12:55

Btw it’s really easy to fake an email sender address...don’t worry about that! I keep getting this email...but I don’t have a webcam either!!! Scam and don’t worry about it...just change your password for any sites that use that password!

yellowbana · 21/10/2018 12:57

Thanks all! Pretty sure nothing will ever come of it, just freaked me a little given that it seemed to come from my email and that it was only 2-3 days ago that I started covering the webcam on my laptop with tape when I'm not using it.

Given that I spent 99% of my time on my laptop binge watching Friends on Netflix, the 'intimate content sites' made me laugh a bit.

Myusername it must be because I was browsing Waitrose's online plant selection the other day. Now he thinks I have that kind of money, when little does he know that the weekly shop gets done in Aldi Grin

MissTerryShopper · 21/10/2018 12:58

OP, the previous posters are correct, it’s a scam. Well it sort of is, beacuse they do have details of your old password etc (there were two major leaks of company data a couple of years back - Yahoo, Carphone Warehouse and others) but they do NOT have access to your system or your address book.
I got the same letter, it’s such a shame I ignored it and noting happened, because I really wanted to see the sites I was purported to have visited!
DELETE IT.

BiggerBoat1 · 21/10/2018 12:58

I got this too. Felt completely confident as the dodgiest thing I ever do is a bit of drunk ebaying - then panicked about what my teens had been up to! Grin

Its a scam though - just ignore.

HandlebarTash81 · 21/10/2018 13:01

“You’re so funny and excited!”

Unless he’s got reaction cam footage of you watching kinder eggs vids on YouTube, I’d say you’re good.

yellowbana · 21/10/2018 13:06

Maybe I should ask him for the footage... If I am as funny as he claims, I could be the next Gogglebox star Grin

HandlebarTash81 · 21/10/2018 13:13

I’d love you to email back with that. Tell them you’re so pleased that someone actually recorded all of that as those were some of the best roly-polys you ever did and that’s not easy in a Gruffalo costume!

Norma27 · 21/10/2018 13:24

I have had 3 of these now. They are a scam, just hoping someone has been watching porn and worried they have been filmed so pay up.
Just delete and ignore.

Scatteredthoughtss · 21/10/2018 13:28

Mine was only $300. Oddly also yesterday. It freaked me out because it mentioned a password, but then I realised that I no longer use that password. It was an old one that I used for amazon in the past, and doubtless other things as well, but really years ago. Anyway, I just binned the email.

HobNobcentral · 21/10/2018 13:56

I got one of these to my work email....

Let IT know; and they said bin it and ran a sweep on my computer.

The IT guy who brought it back; looked very pale, asked him if he was ok?

I have to do a lot of research in to various medical conditions; when IT cam for my laptop I was researching Pearly penile papules with big photos Grin

He quietly asked me if this was a real thing; yes,
Oh Shock

He then said that was why IT gave the job to him, he's relatively new.
And when saw the pic his colleague said that why we never look at their (my team) search history. . .. . .

midsomermurderess · 21/10/2018 14:23

I ignored it.

GraveyardScapers · 21/10/2018 14:35

I’m impressed they got your passwords right - I’ve received 2 of these now and neither password was ever mine so I never believed it was real. It went straight to spam too.

redsummershoes · 21/10/2018 14:37

it's a scam.
if you can, disable auto link in you email programme, so you can't click on links accidentally. or switch to 'text only'.

flintfoxy · 21/10/2018 14:37

I'm so glad I found this - I had exactly the same and had been freaking out

educatingarti · 21/10/2018 14:42

I got something similar quoting the old password I used on mn before their data breach ages ago ( when they made us all change passwords.
They'd have a job recording me watching porn ( as they claimed) though!

Sofizzy · 21/10/2018 14:43

We get these three or four times a day at work. And our pcs are so old they don't have webcams. And I'm sure we would have noticed if someone in our open plan office was visiting 'intimate sites' :)

Noonemournsthewicked · 21/10/2018 16:59

Weirdly I read this thread this morning and then had the scam email in my account later.
Password is wrong however (does have some similar letters and numbers).
