Can somebody talk to me about buying a mattress?

boring alert

Just posting for traffic as went into Big Mattress Showroom yesterday and was totally bamboozled.

Apparently firm ones are better bc they keep you back aligned- is this bollocks though? The salesman said I'd be better asking a physio.. I much preferred the squishy ones. One of the brands I was looking at was Sealys- The Regency one was really super squishy but it might be too soft?

I'm quite skinny (5'9, 125 lb) so I tend to feel any poky bits.

Also how much should I be looking to spend roughly? Is £700 OTT for a standard double?

(I'm single so it would just be me sleeping on it.)

Just posting for traffic. Thanks!

I always thought that a firm mattress was to do with weight and support rather than a bad back.
The more you weigh the more support you need?!

I also could have no idea what I'm talking about 😀

We've recently bought a Leesa mattress and both love it. It does feel very different from a traditional sprung mattress, not at all bouncy. I'd get one again in a shot!

Just avoid Bensons... they're terrible for any aftersales at all - our bed collapsed completely after a couple of months and we got told to fuck off basically - I've never seen a company with a social media feed as bad.

Bed that proved to be shite was a Seely as well if we're going for blaming the other side of the truly shitty companies.

Firm mattresses can cause hip/shoulder problems as they don’t give enough.

We’ve done both proper flipping mattress with separate topper, and pillow top, mattress. Both are great re comfort. It’s nice not to have to flip a mattress, rotating it is a lot easier. One that can be flipped will last longer, but I’m not sure I’d want to keep a mattress more than 10 years anyway. Not so much hygiene as your needs and tastes change, so it could be a waste.

In either case an extra duvet popped under the sheet is lovely.

Didn’t like a memory foam mattress that we had for a while. Didn’t like the smell at first and then it felt like sleeping on chewing gum.

Don't bother with an 'Emma'

Would second the suggestion of checking out John Ryan - their understanding beds section is very comprehensive. If you have any questions their customer service team are extremely helpful. A firm mattress at your body weight would be much too hard I would think!!

@CommanderWaterford

The man in the bed shop told me they can be a funny fit compared to uk standard bedstead sizes, did anyone find that?

This used to be the case but IKEA having been selling standard UK size mattresses for years now.

We've got an Eve mattress and it's great.

But I bloody love a premier inn mattress and that was in the short list too.
