Ganglions

I suffer from ganglions and have done for many years. They usually sort themselves out, but I have a massive one which I'm due to get surgically removed under general anaesthetic in the next couple of weeks.

Does anyone have experience of this operation? I will be asking questions at my pre-op, but I just wanted some real life stories I guess.

Did you have to stay in overnight? How long was the recovery period? How badly did it hurt afterwards? How long were you off work (I work in an office.)

I'm a bit scared so any reassurance would be good!

Watching with interest as DH gets them. He usually squashes them but currently has a large unsquashable one and is considering his options.

I had the contents sucked out and a steroid put in and it went. I had it cut out twice and it came back twice.

I have one on my left wrist that I've had for 27 years. It's more or less flat now but the GP has aspirated it several times over the years. They are shaped like an octopus so squashing it just forces the fluid into the tentacles and over time the body as it were will fill back up. It's synovial fluid in there. My mum had her's surgically removed many years ago and now has a hard lump that's like bone, and a scar. My GP recommended to leave it alone as surgery isn't necessarily going to resolve the issue permanently.
I imagine you'd be in and out in a few hours and it will be sore for a week.

Can your GP not aspirate it?

They often do these under GA just because they don’t know how deep they sit. I think it should be a day case, as long as you have someone to stay with you overnight afterwards? Where is it located? That might impact on your recovery time and pain levels.

Thank you. It's on my wrist. It's a behemoth - too big to drain & I had an ultrasound on it & it goes very deep.

It was just unsightly for most of it's "life", but now it's restricting my movement & causing pain, so it needs to come out.

I know it'll be better once it's gone, but I'm shitting it!!

Hopeful bump for the afternoon crowd.
