Haircut costs

Do all hairdressers still have different prices for men and women?

My haircut costs £37. My adult DS went tot my stylist his week, his hair is a similar length to mine, and his was £13!

How can they get away with this?

Oh yes, I pay £25 for a basic cut & finish. DH pays less than a tenner!! Is it because it doesn't take as long? I know cutting men's hair is more complicated than women's.

I was £65.00 this week.

I had an argument with a hairdresser years ago when I went was going through a butch phase I had a short back and sides and so did a man next to me they did the same to both of us but mine was £30 and his £10. They couldn't say why there was a difference.

I am so glad I now have a friend do mine! She charges around £15 but my god what she does is amazing. She comes to my house to do it, she’s more than qualified and will come over whenever to do little trims over a cup of tea. I love her!

theworldistoosmall · 20/10/2018 22:18

The place I go charge £30 which gets me a wash, cut and blow dry. They charge £20 for males. I don't mind the tenner difference as my hair is a pain to cut and I'm there for ages. It's taken me years and various places to find somewhere that not only can deal with my hair but after I have washed it, resembles the cut. I would pay that actually just to have it washed, as the guy does an amazing massage at the same time.

Oh god. Are you the one who made Kleenex change their tissue box.

I had this exact same conversation with DH today! I had my hair done on Thursday and it cost me £146.00! This was £90 for full head highlights and £56 for cut and blow dry - I said to DH that I just can't keep paying this stupid amount. I started to research other places and saw the difference in prices for the men.

It shouldn't be about what sex you are that dictates the price but the service you get i.e. different prices for different length hair perhaps.

DH said it's because "men won't pay" for the higher prices but I don't want to pay higher prices either but it seems I have no choice.

I am considering complaining as it is sexist imo.

Am also looking to change salons - I still can't get over £146!

DH said it's because "men won't pay" for the higher prices but I don't want to pay higher prices either but it seems I have no choice.

Think DH has hit the nail on the head though. It's simple supply and demand. If they charged men £50 there would be no demand, charged women a tenner and the demand would outweigh the supply.

I stopped using hairdressers a few years ago after watching a blogger show how to DIY on YouTube. I buy salon grade dyes, shampoos etc and cut my own hair. I use a babyliss big hair & pincurl method so even if I screwed it up majorly you'd never notice- and I get complements on my hair all the time.

Just stop using them! I hated the prices and the whole atmosphere made me feel uncomfortable anyway. Who wants to sit in a shop with foils in your hair surrounded by beautiful women looking fabulous while you look your worst 😂

GunpowderGelatine · 20/10/2018 23:40

My hairdresser is unisex and charges based on length of hair, part of the reason why I use them!

GunpowderGelatine · 20/10/2018 23:41

Whatever you do people don't attempt the MN haircut

HeddaGarbled · 20/10/2018 23:46

I don’t disagree with you ........ but, I like going to the hairdresser. I like having my head rubbed, I want the cup of tea, I enjoy the chat. I pay £28 for a cut and blow dry and the rub, tea, chat for an hour. I book an appointment in advance.

H can’t be doing with it. He does a walk in at the barbers, in and out in 15 minutes, no rub, tea, chat, pays £10.

BackforGood · 21/10/2018 00:04

I think Hedda has it, spot on.

ileclerc · 21/10/2018 00:06

I don't want a shirt too and sides so I pay my hairdresser for the time.

RagingWhoreBag · 21/10/2018 00:15

I'm always confused about why long hair costs more than short too! My hairdressers charge me more when I have a bob which needs a trim around the bottom, than when I have short hair which needs trimming at the back, plus trimming/thinning etc all over the top. Doesn't make sense to me.

I've asked at various barbers if they could trim the back of my short hair, just to get rid of the mullet, as I don't want to pay £30 for it. They always say they can't, they're not insured for cutting women's hair. One handy thing about self ID I guess, I'll just tell them I'm a man and if they refuse I'll kick up a stink and sue them for discrimination!

I went together with DH to Supercuta not too long ago - we both wanted a dry cut and hadn't booked an appointment so it was convenient. They had two stylists available so we were both called up at the same time. My hair request was a simple trim whereas he has volume to his hair. I was fine to wait for his to finish once mine was done but not enthralled that mine still cost more despite being quicker! It is something I would now definitely complain about but at the time we paid separately and didn't come to realise until we discussed the cost later.

2totwo · 21/10/2018 07:56

Obvious spelling error there but I think it's clear which salon I mean

GunpowderGelatine · 21/10/2018 08:11

@2totwo I took the kids to Supercuts not long ago on an impromptu visit as we were passing, after waiting aaaaages they were seen, when I went to pay I thought it would be maybe a tenner (their usual place does £8 for the 2 of them)...£27!!!!!! They're were 4 and 1 at the time!
