How Bad will the scar be?

This burn is a week old, any idea how bad the scar will be eventually?
I'm not going to say how it happened because it's identifying but it's chemical in origin.

I'm a regular MN contributor and have nc for this.

You poor thing OP x.

I'm no expert at all, but I should think that will go down nicely over the next few months to a year and perhaps there will only be a ghost of it in the future. Is it a 2nd degree? Fingers crossed and hope you're not in too much pain.

The pain is horrendous but I have morphine, I've been told that I will have extensive scarring, maybe need a graft, it didn't blister because it was too deep. I've had dressings changed twice a day until today. I'm caring for it now and have to remove any crusty bits twice a day, put Vaseline on it to stop the air from hurting it and keep it covered for another four days.

There are lots of silicon gels and sheets that can help, speak to your nurse, they are expensive though

My dh has a 3rd degree burn and a 2nd degree in his hand and wrist, he still has no feeling on the 3rd degree part, but the second degree part has healed remarkably well, you can still see the scar but it’s not as bad as either of us expected it to be.

They used special ‘burn’ kit which included a silicone dressing as apparently this acts like a layer of skin.

He was offered a skin graft but he refused as he’s not that bothered by the scaring.

I made him massage bio oil and cocco butter into the area when it was allowed which I think helped.

It did look worse before it looked better.

If it’s bad again I’d pop up to a minor injury’s unit and see if they can help, as my dh had to have his dressing changed every 12 hours then every 48 hours for 10/14 days after so I’m surprised they have let you care for it at home after only a week.

Sorry I can’t find the photos to show you.

Oh bless you my love, it sounds so painful.

It will get better. Focus on that - it will. And enjoy the morphine!

Crispyduckskin · 21/10/2018 20:38

Thank you all for replying, I have dressings to put on it and have been shown how to remove the crust that forms, each time I do it I almost pass out from the pain and it's a really difficult area to put a dressing on.
I wear glasses too and can't see much without them so I'm stuck just listening to the radio or using my iPad on maximum magnification.
I'm going to try and find some old glasses and take the nose grips off them and they should fit over the dressing.
I hate the morphine it makes me feel sick, sleepy and constipated so I'm trying not to take much.
