I'm currently on maternity pay, due to go back to work in the beginning of December.. I'm looking for ways to save money this Christmas. My daughter is 8 months old so will be 10 months old at Xmas, have bought some stuff in the sales so far for her. Our house is not very big at all so trying to limit our spends due to this too. We have a tree and all of the decorations so we don't need to think about that. What other items did you buy for your babies for their first Christmas?

Also, I buy for my family too, last year when I was pregnant people just got a voucher and chocolates. Shall I do this again?

An 8 month old really isn’t going to know or care what your have got her. Just get a couple of small things.
Good presents for grandparents are framed photos of the baby or a photo calendar etc

Presents for a 10 month old is more about you wanting to give a present (which is fair enough) rather than it being about her.
A child that age will not know or care.
I’d buy one new toy that you think she’ll like and leave it at that. She’ll have more fun with the wrapping paper and empty boxes anyway (a cliche but true).

At that age in my experience they love the Christmas tree lights and tearing open the wrapping paper, they don’t care what is inside.

Get a 1st Christmas bauble for the tree! And a personalised stocking you can use each year going forward.

I’d give everyone wine/chocolate again and a voucher ( just pick a shop you know they like)

Yeah I do want to get my daughter gifts.. I know that she won't care at all, just wanted an idea into what sort of present/a specific "traditional" present

I got a tiny teddy which said "1st Christmas " and has a hanging loop - it now goes on the Christmas tree every year

We got a big round box with a few baby musical instruments in it, then added to it every year. A huge hit for years and we have very musical DC 10 years on!

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 21/10/2018 14:06

For first Christmas we just got a handful of things, generally stuff that would be more use over the following 6ish months.

There are some beautiful cloth books which are suitable for babies, perhaps a nice wooden toy as the something special and then maybe the old reliables like stacking cups, squeaky eggs, bath toys.

Baby of course won't know what's going on but like you, we wanted to buy gifts for them.

Heatherjayne1972 · 21/10/2018 14:11

You will get tons of toys each and every Christmas now!
First Christmas for mine was a musical toy or teddy with their name/ date of birth on

If you're looking for ways to save money I honestly wouldn't buy anything else for her. She will receive presents from family. It's just stuff it doesn't matter.

kaytee87 · 21/10/2018 14:49

If you need to save money then it's madness buying a 10mo baby Christmas presents.

Oh dear 🙈

We bought our DD a rocking horse for her first xmas nothing else apart from hat as she was only 7 months and we knew she would get lots from other family members. She's only just started using he rocking horse now at aged 2 so that was . As I was on mat leave we literally bought everyone's xmas presents using points on cards. So we doubled up our sainsbury's nectar points when thy were doing double up promotions and managed to get a few things there - wool cardigan for MIL, craft beer for BIL etc. We also used all the boots advantage card points (clocked up with all that baby spending) on fragrance gift sets etc for other family members. It was a lot more frugal than the gifts we normally give but everyone was understanding because they knew we were down to one income. We made up for it the following year when I was back at work.
