Hi, I am new to this so hope I have posted in right place. My son is 13 days old and since day 10 he has been really unsettled. He is acting like he has lots of wind by crying and holding himself a certain way. I am thinking maybe I should switch formula? Any advice on best one? I am using aptimal (like i did with my daughter) but I hear they have changed the formula. Any one else issues with the new formula? Maybe I should also switch to Dr. Brown bottles? Feeling a bit overwhelmed and worried about him!

You could try a Comfort Milk formula.
I'd switch formulas gradually if possible, either by mixing the old and new powder together at first or by giving just one bottle of the new formula per day for the first few days.
Lactose intolerance is rare in babies but symptoms include diarrhoea, tummy pain, wind and bloating.

First up, congratulations! My little one had this. Sounds like it could be colic. Try MAM bottle or similar anti colic ones. Some gripe waters are good from birth. Tried comfort milk but because it's thicker personally my baby didn't like it. If in doubt, health visitor. They'll know for definitely. FlowersBrew

Could you try using infacol and colic drops in the bottles? I wouldn't necessarily say it's the formula.
Ds is like this, we did try to swap formula but it actually made it worse. We swear by dentinox colic drops now

Bicycling his little legs might help too. When he's led down just move his legs like he's riding a bike a few times, then bend his knees towards his chest. Used to get an impressive fart off mine!

Try hipp organic, our dd had similar issues on aptamil.

HenryInTheTunnel · 20/10/2018 09:18

We used aptamil comfort for a long time after my son starting pulling away from normal aptamil. Unfortunately, i think it might end up being trial and error until you find one that suits.

KelJoban · 20/10/2018 09:19

Thank so much everyone, I really value your help. I will get some anti colic bottles and also the dentinox anti colic drops. I am also trying the bicycle legs. My son is always parping every day and gassy so I hope this helps. If none of this helps, I will try hipp organic. Is colic common in babies? I never had this with my daughter. I am grateful for this forum!

My ds didn't like the new aptamil at all. Very sicky and obviously struggling with wind, leg stretching etc. We switched to cow and gate and had no issues since.

KelJoban · 26/10/2018 06:40

Does anyone have advice on how I can switch from aptimal to hipp organic? Do i make the straight switch or bit by bit?

I should add that we switched to anti colic bottles a few days ago (dr.browns) and also have been using anti colic drops (dentinox). Little man is bringing up wind but he is constipated. So now thinking about trying new formula as suggested?

Our midwife told us that boys suffer more with digestion, wind etc than girls.

redandbluehedgehogs · 26/10/2018 06:47

Are you using the ready made formula or the powder? I was told the readymade is easier for them to digest when they are tiny

KelJoban · 26/10/2018 06:56

Ah that is interesting about boy babies versus girls!! My daughter had no issues. We are using powder - I didn't realise that about readymade being easier. Some people have said about the aptimal causing issues and that hipp organic switch was better? Any thoughts?

So, the child in question is 10 now, but I switched from Farley’s to HIPP completely - one bottle Farley’s, next and subsequent bottles HIPP. No problem.

ItsClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 26/10/2018 07:40

My DD really didn't do well with Aptamil (DS no problems) we switched to Hipp and she was a different baby.

No advice with the bottles though, we used tommee tippee, couldn't get on with dr browns.

Congratulations by the way!

WehateMondays · 26/10/2018 07:58

Just switch, no need to mix formulas. I work with prem babies and if parents decide to change the milk it's just a straight swap. TBH most of the formulas are very similar.
we only use ready made and the SMA seems thicker and causes more constipation.
Mam and Dr Brown bottles are worth a try.
Also try gentle tummy massage and bicycle legs and a warm bath.
Or ask GP for gaviscon, that sometimes helps.
Good luck, it really is trial and error Flowers
