Help me gage my reaction to this situation

DD is first year of comprehensive school, aged 11. Yesterday her class was made to watch The Woman in Black. DD is quiet and shy and is generally of a nervous disposition. She came home from school upset, had nightmares last night and again tonight.

I vaguely remember watching the film few years ago and I remember it being quite frightening.

Am I over reacting or is this bit of a piss take on the schools behalf? Confused

My ds watched it at school at 11, I am 47 and can't watch it! I would be telling the school it was inappropriate tbh.

It’s a 12A and the teacher was present. I actually think it does kids good to be frightened in a safe environment, everything is a bit soft these days.

FaithInfinity · 19/10/2018 22:34

I am a total wimp and I won’t watch it because I think it looks too scary. Quick google got me to the BBFC website which says it was a 15! So surely the school should have got permission before showing it?

FaithInfinity · 19/10/2018 22:35

Ah apparently they cut parts from it to achieve a 12A rating.

DeusEx · 19/10/2018 22:36

Context? Are they studying the book?

UrsulaPandress · 19/10/2018 22:36

What are they watching films at school?

Doordowny · 19/10/2018 22:36

Yes, I feel even at a 12 rating the high majority of the class were under age and no parental consent was requested.

Even more so if it's a 15 rating!

Why not what.

Doordowny · 19/10/2018 22:37

No link to the class work. They were winding down for imminent half term so the teacher put a film on.

My dd was 13.5 when she saw it in the cinema when it came out - she hated it and said it was horrible. DH went with her, and I don't think they realised it was a 15 cert until it was too late. Some of her year group studied the book, but her class did something else - she was quite relieved.

For age 11 I think it would have still been a bit much, even if some bits were edited.

It scared the hell out of me and I was in my late 40s.

MsOliphant · 19/10/2018 23:10

Yes, Daniel Radcliffe’s acting in that is pretty bloody terrifying.

MsOliphant · 19/10/2018 23:11

Terrifyingly bad that is Grin
