A thread to warm your heart (yes, I know that’s cheesy!)

This week my DC are off school for their October break and we are visiting family in another part of the UK. We went to see my Grandad today for the first time since we were last visiting in July. He’s 94, in an old people’s home and really pretty frail.

All 4 of my DC love their Great Grandad but my DTs (8) have a really special bond with him. They actually cheered when I said we were going to see him for half an hour.

We only see him a few times a year but despite that and despite his hugely failing memory and eyesight, he knows their names and even knows the DTs apart. (They have teachers at school who still can’t tell them apart.)

I LOVE how excited they get to see him and I love how much joy it brings him. I know that for many 8yr olds spending an afternoon in an old people’s home wouldn’t be their idea of fun, but for my DTs it genuinely makes them SO happy!

Just a wee thread to share your heart warming stories.

I haven't got a story of my own, but that's lovely, and they are old enough that they will remember him too Smile.

Didn't want to leave you on unanswered threads.

That’s so lovely OP, I loved it when the DCs were younger and would get excited to see family. It’s so nice to watch your children having a bond with someone who has been so precious to you

Your post reminded me of a TV programme we’re watching st the moment - ‘Old people’s home for 4 year olds’

It’s so heartwarming and lovely and I have a tear in my eye every episode.

There is some really interesting research coming from it too, about how spending time with children may potentially slow down the aging process.

I saw that programme advertised and meant to record it. I think it would make me weep.

It’s so lovely to witness genuine love and affection when we are so used to hearing about how kids are easily bored, entitled etc these days.

How completely lovely. ❤️ And what a hugely rewarding thing for your Grandad - that legacy of love and connection continuing on.
