New ryanair baggage policy. What do you do with liquids?

Please help. I can't find clarification on the Ryan air website. They have a new policy that unless you pay to bring your bag on with you, it goes in the hold.
So do you just put them in the bags for the hold and forget aboit it. Or do I have to bag mini bottles up in clear bags and carry them on with me?

I don't know specifically about the Ryanair policy, but there are no restrictions on liquids in hold baggage, the restrictions only apply to liquids that you want to take on board as hand luggage, if you aren't taking on hand luggage just put your liquids in the hold bag.

bungleZippy12 · 19/10/2018 18:25

You can take normal bottles of liquids if the case/bag is going in the hold. But if you’re taking hand luggage only, or paying for priority (where you can take 2 bags as hand luggage) then you have to put mini size bottles of liquids in a clear case and bring them in said hand luggage.

Hope that makes sense.

Disneydilemma · 19/10/2018 18:30

I flew with Ryan air the other day. They don’t take the bag into the hold until just before you get on the plane so still had to go through security with the usual little bag of liquids.
I’m not sure if you can check it into the hold before security.

I've just looked at the Ryanair site and it seems they take the bags off you at the gate and put them in the hold, so in that case the liquids restrictions would still apply because the bags will be scanned as hand luggage at security.

gussiefox · 19/10/2018 18:34

They put your bag in the hold at the gate, so the usual liquid restrictions apply as you have to go through security first. If you want to check the bag into the hold before going through security, then a whole other set of charges (and queues!) will apply.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 19/10/2018 18:35

Can anyone tell me what happens if I neither book priority boarding (with 10kg bag in the cabin), nor book a 10kg bag to go in the hold? Will they still just take my bag from me at the gate (which I am perfectly happy with)?

I don't care where the bag goes, and I don't mind carrying small bottles. I'm just really, really cheap.

Bombardier25966 · 19/10/2018 18:35

As above, the bag is not taken from you until you board, so you need to follow the normal hand luggage liquids rule.

Assume that they will take your bag but they don't always. Although the official rules are changing I don't think much will change in practice.

Bombardier25966 · 19/10/2018 18:37

Yes, the bag will most likely be taken from you.

I'm cheap too. Don't need priority boarding as I prefer boarding last, and don't pay for seating as I don't care where I go!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 19/10/2018 18:38

Oh I always board last - 3 year old DS is better on a plane than he used to be, but minimising the sitting time is key!

JosellaPlayton · 19/10/2018 18:39

Treat it as if it’s hand luggage as you’ll have to go through security with the bag and check it at the boarding gate. So basically it’s the worst of the worst- all the hassle of security, tiny liquid bottles, dragging your bag around the airport and you still have to wait at baggage reclaim at the other end!

feelitinyourbones · 19/10/2018 18:47

The policy changes on 1st Nov as very widely publicised.

When is your flight?

If it's before 31st October 'old' rules apply. So priority get 10kg case plus small bag on board. Non-priority get small bag on board and 10kg bag taken for free at gate - after security so liquid rules apply.

If it's after 1st Nov new rules apply. Priority still get 10kg case plus a slightly bigger small bag (medium rucksack) on board. Non-priority ONLY get the medium rucksack. This is the biggest change. They will charge you LOTS if you rock up at the gate with the 10kg bag if you don't have priority. However there is now an option to check it in at check in for £8ish. And then the liquid rules wouldn't apply as it doesn't go through security with you.

And there is a further exception... if you booked to fly after 1st Nov before they announce the change of policy a couple of month ago, they might have contacted you offering free 10kg hold bags to make up for it.

Can you tell I fly Ryanair a lot?

Disneydilemma · 19/10/2018 21:56

They put a paper tag on our bags at the gate indicating that they were to go in the hold.
As we walked down the stairwell bit towards the plane I saw quite a few discarded tags so I presume some people ripped them off and took their bags into the plane anyway!

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 19/10/2018 22:13

We flew with them last week. We had the usual little bag of stuff through security then once through we bunged them in our wee case which went in the hold. Interestingly on the way back most people were told to take their cases on board. Also we stressed about hand luggage size and case weight.no one checked and no one seemed to care about the dimensions of your bag.

FireflyGirl · 20/10/2018 00:00

We flew last week.

Nobody checked the size or weight of our small bags.

We checked the 10kg bags in before security, no extra charge, so it wouldn't have been an issue to put full size bottles of liquid in them. That might have been because we also checked in a suitcase and car seat, though.

ForalltheSaints · 20/10/2018 07:38

Problem is solved if you never fly Ryanair as I do. The rules of rugby or football change less often than Ryanair's for what you can carry on board and what you are charged extra for.

The rule changing is very irritating. But so long as you are capable of reading the current ones and sticking to them, the cost saving even with add-ons, and sheer volume of routes offered make travel and visiting family possible for many of us.

Then again, on another current thread we see that some adults aren't even capable of catching a flight when already in the airport so I can understand that bag measuring and following written instructions might be too challenging

Thanks everyone. Xx
