Is mumsnet sexist

This is a genuine question and I'm not looking to stir anything up but recent reports in the news about such things as Kleenex Mansize and the Waitrose Gentleman's sandwich debacle made me wonder. I appreciate that mumsnet has got the tagline by parents for parents but surely the name itself is non-inclusive? Smile

No

PurpleAndTurquoise · 20/10/2018 22:08

I think they should change the name to Parentsnet too. I agree with the OPs point. If women complain about Gentlemens Relish they should be equally offended by the name Mumsnet.

ThePrincipal · 20/10/2018 22:12

Mums wanted to talk to other mums and this is a place to gather.

There are piston head forums with mostly men on.

Do all differences have to be airbrushed to appear to be right on and pc?

There is a dadsnet.

Surely that alone debunks your argument, without stopping to consider that 90% of the internet is male dominated.

Mother’s Pride bread 🙄 Is this a practice run for a Year 8 debate ?

It's been around a while so maybe needs an update.

The trouble with rebranding is that it could alienate those who recognise the brand.

It is mainly women on here and that's for many reasons but, chiefly, women are still the primary carer and I don't think your average man would give parenting as much headspace and woild have a different outlook. It will be that way until caring is 50/50 in every household or the ratio between mums vs dads as primary carers is 1:1. In the meantime, Dadsnet might be an idea

"mumsnet - by parents for parents"
You missed the full details. Also, see Dadsnet. And Gransnet.

Mother's Pride bread dates from 1935. Take it up with the original brand producer.

Mothercare dates from 1962. Looking at it, they were heavily skewed towards maternity wear plus nursery items and baby clothes. The tables have turned now, and the brand is failing. Perhaps this is partly why?

As for Woman's Own, it's magazine intended for a female audience. Just as Men's Health, Esquire, Maxim, Loaded and whatever else is still out there are written for a male audience.

Get a grip OP.

Flatbellyfella · 20/10/2018 22:48

There is a small amount of very sexist members of late, that give male contributors, very short measure,
The bulk of members are open for good honest discussion .
Of late I just lurk around the topics, without feeling the need to get involved in heated discussions.
" Words are mightier than the sword ", and a lot of hurt and pain can come from spiteful sexist comments, that are typed over the Internet without any knowledge of the person they are aimed at.

I massively value a space which is female-dominated, to discuss things from a female point of view with others who understand what it's like navigating life as a woman. I would be much, much less inclined to use Mumsnet if it was less female-focused and I don't think that's sexist.
