How popular are tag /comfort blankets?

I’ve taken up sewing as a hobby, just making things for the house but also for things to sell.

I enquired as to what sells and a friend mentioned tag blankets. I had a
look on Ebay and there is a lot for sale, but when I mentioned them at work, nobody had heard of them.

My heart sank, tbh, as I’d made one for a member of staff, whose little one is due in a few weeks (she wasn’t in when I mentioned them and didn’t say I made one for her either).

I’m not sure now whether to give it to her, in case she doesn’t know what it is. I thought it was a great idea, my great nephew loves the tag blanket that I made him, but the more I think of it, the more it’s putting me off.
Shall I just go out and buy something else?
I wouldn’t mind, but it’s really cute. (Well, I think so anyway..)

I’d give the gift! I’ve just been given one for baby DS, and despite not knowing they were a thing, I knew what it was for and will give it to him when he’s older. Like you say, it looks cute and I appreciate the thought.

Thanks @Thistles, that’s given me some confidence 🙂.

If I had a tag blanket made by a company/person that is not CE approved, I'd be a bit unsure tbh.

I'd be able to visually check all stitching regularly, but given it's designed for a child's sensory needs, you expect it to go in their mouths too. I'd want to know the component parts are safe; the fabric dyes as well as composition of fabric and any chemical treatments it may have had.

Really don't mean to put a downer on this, but I would recommend you steer clear.

Anyone willing to pay the cost of your materials and time will also want the above.

Anyone who wants it as cheap as they can get, won't ask themselves those questions. You won't be able to stitch an sell high enough quantities at low prices to make it worth your while. Sorry.

But...

Have a look at weighted blankets. Google 'how to make'. High value if produced correctly and usually for older kids and adults, not really expected to be a 'chew toy'. I would consider buying this from a non CE certified homemade seller.

Thanks @legocardsagain.

I have advertised some tag blankets for sale, and I put the type of materials used, and the washing instructions. They are not expensive.

I’ll have a look at weighted blankets, thank you. Any advice is appreciated 🙂.

Market them for older adults with dementia. 'fiddle blankets' very popular.

Thanks @overagain, fabulous idea!
