Do you have an 'emergency winter kit' in your car?

What's in it? I rarely have to drive anywhere too far away from home but I always have at least one child with me, sometimes two. So I figured it would be a good idea to have some stuff in the car for if we broke down in the snow or something.

I always have lots of snacks in my car!! I will be fine in a breakdown. Currently have multi pack of Wotsits, Pombears, cocoa pops bar, dozen bottles of water, bananas, Kellog's bars and some Maltesers. Big bag!!
Blush
Also have my winter tyres on the car!!
Sorted!

Yes, I live in Canada, it's silly not to have one here.
I have a small shovel, rock salt in a coffee can (that can be used in an emergency as a stove or water bucket), candles, lighter and matches, snacks, water (only full jug 2/3 in case it freezes it wont split), space blanket, flashlight, boost cables and emergency roadside kit, spare winter outer wear (touques, mitts, scraves, wollen socks)
And a paper map of where we are traveling (if doing long distance)

Mookatron · 19/10/2018 16:19

Depends where you live. I'm in London so I don't really bother. When I lived up North in the middle of nowhere I used to carry hiking boots, extra coats etc, a shovel, blankets, a torch. And used it more than once.

HollidayArmadillo · 19/10/2018 16:24

Mines just a breakdown kit really, it's not specific to winter
It has -
Nappies
Baby wipes
Water
Blankets
Torch
Snacks (things like cereal bars/dried fruits/crisps)
Small basic first aid kit
Small bag of change
Fully charged portable phone charger

bagpiss · 19/10/2018 16:33

Since my dh broke down in the height of cold snowy winter last year and had to wait 7 hours in the dark night alone we both keep basics like warm big waterproof hi vis coat, snacks, water-changed regularly, wind up radio and torch, blanket, cushion, first aid kit, emergency phone charger (regularly charged up) I also have a travel kettle and some coffee & powdered milk etc but that because we do a lot of day trips.

BiddyPop · 19/10/2018 16:44

I have the map of the city (always have that anyway).
Water and some snacks in the car (if DD hasn't raided it too badly).

In boot, a box with
WD40, work gloves, decent bright flashlight
Re-usable handwarmers (click to heat type)
First aid kit (small - few wipes, few bandaids, 1 elastic bandage, 2 pairs gloves)
I also have a USB connection for the cigarette lighter, and a cable for my phone - but I need an older connection as well for DD's phone.
Tissues, hand wash gel, bag of change for car parking/emergency chocolate etc.

Once winter really sets in, I always have spare hats and gloves in the boot, and aim to have a spare blanket there too (loads of fleece ones at home). (There's normally a lifejacket, and often waterproof boots and trousers, there as well - in winter, I have proper outer gear and a spare layer there if the weather is going to be bad). I also have enough hi viz indoors, that I should really throw 1 jacket into the car.

I keep meaning to get some cat litter and a shovel. And jump leads. The spare tyre and jack are all working (I've checked), the emergency kit is there (triangle etc) and I have a battery charging yoke for emergencies also.

I used to carry nappy sacks, as they were useful as emergency bin bags - they're in my camping kit nowadays but I should add a few back to car.

Onebiteofeverything · 19/10/2018 16:48

I always have a break down kit in the boot for emergencies. It has;

Nappies
Wipes
Bottles of water
Cereal bars
Blanket
Spare clothes for DS
Torch

We also always keep our winter coats and wellies in the boot incase we have to get out on a muddy verge.

LittleHootie · 19/10/2018 17:27

I don't but keep meaning to. I remember my friend being stuck in a terrible traffic jam for hours. She said the worst thing was the thirst- she felt really ill from dehydration. So I always have bottles of water in the car now.

LittleHootie · 19/10/2018 17:29

Oh and when it snows keep a sledge in the boot. I had to abandon car in the snow and carry DC for a few miles. It was horrendous.

Petalflowers · 19/10/2018 17:34

In winter, always make sure dh has a bag with water, lucozade, cereal bars torch, and blanket. Usually have spare (tatty) fleeces in mine, plus water.

theboxofdelights · 19/10/2018 17:36

Yes, blankets, hats, shovel, water, small trangia stove, two tins of soup, packet of biscuits, tea bags, carton of oatily. car has hi viz, water and torches anyway. Boots and socks get added when it gets cold.

I got trapped on the M11 overnight in the snow in 2003 then married someone who had lived in a ski resort in 2004 so being prepared is just life here.

Pooleschoolschoice · 19/10/2018 17:37

I need to knoow more about the travel kettle.... does it run the battery down!?

We like coffee and we walk a lot..m

BananaBonanza · 19/10/2018 17:42

2 space blankets, a couple of blankets packable down coats all of us, woolly hat scarfs and gloves. Torch first aid kit etc

Water I usually carry with us

Spudlet · 19/10/2018 17:49

I always have a spare blanket and towel, and I don't leave home without snacks and drinks in the changing bag. Spare clothes for DS also a given. Torch, hand-warmers, gloves. For a longer journey in serious bad weather, I bung the spade in the boot and I even have snow chains for my little car if necessary - £25 off eBay, and I've used them too.

I broke down in the middle of London one winters night and I was shaking by the time the RAC arrived! So a few extras are a good thing to carry, IMO.

overagain · 19/10/2018 17:52

Not a much anymore but I used to travel across the Yorkshire Moors twice daily so had;

Phone charger
Torch
Water
Snacks
Car litter
Shovel
Sleeping bag
Snow shoes
Winter coat and spare trousers, socks and shoes.

anniehm · 19/10/2018 17:57

I used to when kids were small and do carry if we head out of town off the beaten track/bad winter weather. I have a couple of blankets, couple of foil blankets, couple of ponchos, always carry water, I then carry hats, scarves and gloves for the humans, the dogs coat and we carry emergency hi vis vests year round (bought when travelling to Germany where it's the law). I keep a couple of torches in the car year round, but take food if going off main roads.

TinselKitten · 19/10/2018 17:57

Yes.

Two sleeping bags
Torch
Energy banks for phones
Food and water
Plus usual boot tools.

CherryPavlova · 19/10/2018 17:59

Yes but we live rurally and I drive a long way quite often. I have a shovel, fleece blanket, spare mobile phone, flask hot drink, torch and a piece of sacking.

timmytweeted · 19/10/2018 18:04

I used to when I had an old car. Had food, blankets, water and even a massive high vis jacket as my journey home had no lights.

Now I drive a brand new car I feel a bit less likely to need it but still have a blanket and water just in case.

Andro · 19/10/2018 18:09

I always have a first aid kit (with space blankets), high viz jacket, water, energy bars and flashlight in the car. When the weather starts to change I put spare winter clothes/boots, grit, deicer and shovel in the boot. I also start carrying a flask of coffee and a flask of hot water plus cuppa soup/pot rice type things.

Temporaryanonymity · 19/10/2018 18:09

My boot is such a mess I could probably fashion an emergency wardrobe for a traffic jam of people.
