Hi all.

I'm having my lower wisdom tooth out soon.. I'm having it out under local (although I have been given the option of GA at hospital, however dental nurse said this wouldn't be "very nice" and advised I go for local)
I had my top ones out and it was a doddle. But this one is impacted and will involve cutting the gum and drilling some bone away..... I'm really quite nervous. I asked for sedation through IV or gas but my dentist doesn't want to give me this as they don't have anywhere in the surgery for me to recover. I'd go private but it's going to cost £700 so quite expensive.....

I'm worried about;

The pain afterwards (due to the drilling in the bone)

How long it will take to actually take the tooth out

The sound of the drill/sensation

Possibility of dry socket/loss of feeling

Any advice and reassurance would be welcome..... Thanks

Had mine out at the dental hospital as the tooth root was hooked under the jaw bone (eek). Worse bit was definitely the drilling- I couldn't feel any pain as it was heavily number but it makes your head vibrate a bit.

And for some bizarre reason, when they are extracting your tooth it always feels like they are PUSHING really hard- instead of pulling.

But the really bad bit- I have two teeth extracted this way (small jaw bone) and each time the dental surgeons have been hugely attractive. First guy was this gorgeous Hungarian Jewish guy and I ended up with my head resting on his slightly chubby stomach. Which was actually rather nice Blush.
And the other guy had a lovely Irish accent- so it was really relaxing to listen to him. But my face each time looked horrendous...

This is happening tomorrow morning at 9.00am and I feel sick with nerves. Got diazepam but not sure whether to even bother taking it because it gave me a dreadful headache last time. I've got Kalms which probably won't be enough.
Please hold my hand.

@spinn it was brutal actually but I got through it and it's done now. I'm actually almost completely healed now.

I got into a panic mid way through the extraction and had to focus on slowing my breathing down.. I was in tears and it was quite embarrassing actually.

I wouldn't recommend having an impacted lower wisdom tooth out under local and if I have to have my left one out I'll go for GA or IV sedation for sure.

I read your original post before and didn't dare comment as I had a bit of a horrific experience having mine out! First they couldn't anaesthetise me properly (which often happens at the dentist so I had anticipated that), I had to have so much anaesthetic that my ears were numb too. They had to cut away bone and drill tooth in to pieces to extract. My roots were twisted at a 90 degree angle. I wasn't allowed to sit up for half an hour after the extraction and had to lay in another room of the hospital on my own, and they automatically put me on antibiotics because of the trauma. Glad you got through yours! Hope they're healing well!
