A “Megan and Harry’s” question

I am in Australia, and we have these 2 lovely Royals touring here at the moment.

In the Uk media, Does the Duchess always get referred to as Megan Markle?

And if they, or any other Royal attend an official engagement, Is it shown in great detail. Helicopters flying over, media camped outside the function. Or is it a bit more relaxed there.

Not complaining, I am loving seeing Prince Harry and the Duchess going about their day here. They have been very popular, and several melt your heart moments.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex is how they are now officially known. (We call them Harry and Megs at home).

And yes, for official engagements like they had recently in Sussex, media heavy.

I love it too!

We call them Harry and Megs at home

Mercifully, no one I know has ever called her that.

Meandyouandyouandme · 19/10/2018 07:27

Yes she’s still referred to as Meghan Markle, but Kate still gets Kate Middleton sometimes for some reason.

My impressions are -

Formal media call her the Duchess of Sussex. In tabloid headlines she might just be 'Meghan'.

Minor, uninteresting Royal engagements pass unnoticed other than in local media (bear in mind someone in the Royal family is usually doing some kind of engagement pretty much daily except during their holidays).

The level of coverage for major ones (or 'firsts' e.g. first as a married couple, first after having a baby) varies and can sometimes be at the level you describe.

I have been watching the Australian coverage on Sunrise (Australia) janaus and it has been so much more fun than the UK coverage. They seem to have gone down really well. Loved Harry with the old lady, and the little boy who stroked his beard. The comments from the studio are great.
Some outlets here have only just stopped calling the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, so we will probably hear Meghan Markel for quite some time.

SellFridges · 19/10/2018 07:33

I’m never sure why Kate gets called Kate by the press when she is almost universally referred to as Catherine by her husband and family.

AngeloMysterioso · 19/10/2018 08:21

@SellFridges the same reason people say Vicky Beckham or call the queen Liz. To bring them down a peg or two.

Margaret, that is the 3rd time that Harry has met Daphne, the lovely old lady. They say he looks for her in the crowd. They said next time they will show her their baby.

And how amazing Harry is with the children, especially Luke who stroked his beard and got a hug or 2.

Opening of Invictus Games tomorrow.

Ha! Not sure why you would care what we call her in our own home @pigeondujour

LarkDescending · 20/10/2018 10:50

Kate became Kate for media editors because it was short enough to fit a tabloid headline. Resulting in readers attacking her as “pretentious” when the wedding paraphernalia had her as the more elaborate Catherine, despite the fact that it had been her name all her life.

ThanksItHasPockets · 20/10/2018 10:52

‘Kate’ also enabled the tabloids to coin that delightful nickname ‘Waity Katie’ Hmm

janaus · 20/10/2018 11:35

the lovely old lady Daphne went out in the crowds again yesterday to see Prince Harry climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Today was a solemn occasion. The re opening of the War Memorial in Sydney after extensive renovations. Very moving service. The prince in uniform.

I really dont like them being referred to by their maiden names. Its sounds disrespectful to me.

janaus · 20/10/2018 11:44

Yes Ghoul, I agree. I thought it might be just Australian media being overly casual. Headlines usually start of with a Markle or Middleton. Or Megan or Kate. Then the article would actually refer them as Duchess of Sussex or duchess of Cambridge
