Help please! What's going on with DD's lips? Pic attached.

DD developed allergies to strawberries & raspberries in this last year. She came out in hives and we narrowed it down to being caused by those berries.

I let DD have a little drop of bbq sauce with her dinner tonight and she's now complaining of sore lips. The lips themselves aren't swollen so not sure if this could be caused by an allergy. As you can see, below her lip there is definitely some irritation. Should I be giving her piriton for this? Please help!

The irritation has just appeared in the last 10 minutes since having the bbq sauce.

It looks like she's been licking her bottom lip and the spicyness of the sauce is perhaps causing some irritation?

turquoise88 · 18/10/2018 19:37

Ah sorry, x post. Not sure then? Perhaps piriton to be on the safe side?

It's probably just the chilli in the sauce that's aggravating her skin, rather than an allergy. She's a beautiful girl!

combatbarbie · 18/10/2018 19:39

Both my dds had this with tomatoes, goes away after couple of hours x

MorvaanReed · 18/10/2018 19:40

I would give the Piriton just in case.

My daughter gets red and irritated around her lips, we think it's excema and made worse if she keeps licking it (hard not to). Keeping the area clean and using vaseline as a barrier seems to help.

Any sign of respitory issues do not bugger about, 999.

Mistigri · 18/10/2018 19:52

Give her some piriton.

It may be that she just has very sensitive skin. My dd as a child used to have skin reactions to contact with any concentrated form of tomatoes (eg ketchup, tomato sauce) even though she is definitely not allergic to them.

Alternatively if your dd is subject to food allergies it might be a genuine allergic reaction to something - did she also complain of any itchiness or unpleasant sensation in her mouth? Or stomach ache after eating? Barbecue sauce might contain soya and/or mustard both of which are quite common food allergens.

It doesn't look like a very serious reaction so don't panic. The majority of food allergies are very liveable with.

I had this as a kid it was lip lickers dermatitis. I had a steroid cream for it from GP.

MollysMummy2010 · 18/10/2018 20:36

My girl used to get like that after eating ketchup - Piriton and a bit of sudocreme sorted it out. Maybe mention to doc if you are in there for something else but I wouldn’t worry

anitagreen · 18/10/2018 20:38

Ah just re read it sorry didn't see it only happened tonight it could be something in the sauce I'm allergic to nik nik crisps, Chinese sweet and sour sauce and things like that I don't have a bad allergy but I get itchy

INeedNewShoes · 18/10/2018 20:39

I used to get like that, plus sore skin in the corners of my mouth, when I was young. In my case it was a sensitivity to soya and it cleared up within days once I realised and stopped eating anything containing it.

AnnaNimmity · 18/10/2018 20:43

lip lickers dermatitis - I didn't realise that was a thing! My dd gets this - from licking around her lips. It looks like that OP.

Mummy2one2016 · 18/10/2018 20:47

My little boy gets this over his face after eating certain products. With a history of allergies I would give piriton to be on the safe side.

pickingdaisies · 18/10/2018 20:54

My daughter used to get that from pasta sauce from a jar (only certain brand though), flavoured crisps and kiwi fruit. She didn't lick her lips, we just avoided them and she eventually grew out of it. Antihistamine tablet won't hurt and may help, plus a cream or balm to soothe.

ittooshallpass · 18/10/2018 21:07

My DD used to get that when she ate ketchup. Used to be gone in a few hours with no medication. Unless it's bothering her I wouldn't medicate.

Getonthatbroomandfly · 18/10/2018 21:23

Myself and daughters get this when we're run down and fighting a virus!

Millie2013 · 18/10/2018 21:28

DD has similar, after lengthy investigations, she was diagnosed with oral allergy syndrome. Once she was diagnosed, it all made sense

DS gets it with BBQ sauce if we don't wipe any excess off from around his face. He ends up with red raised patches where the BBQ sauce was. It's not very serious for us as DS doesn't have any other allergies, it just seems like a sensitivity for us.

youarenotkiddingme · 18/10/2018 21:32

My ds also got it from tomato based sauces.

He also had full on hives and an anaphylactic reaction after eating tomato based foods.

He's definitely not allergic to tomatoes though and grew out of it!

I'd use some antihistamine cream on it and if she's had hives before to other things speak to gp about allergy testing.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 18/10/2018 21:34

I should say that if we don't wipe any excess off immediately obviously we do clean up the poor boy!!!

Spinterest · 18/10/2018 21:50

I've known a few people get a sudden and in two cases extreme allergy to BBQ sauce. It happened to me too - swollen eyes, lips limbs the lot. I would give piriton and watch closely.
