Anyone got an Tefal Actifry?

And are they any good?

Oven chips just aren't cutting it for us.
OH wants to get a fat fryer but I can't bare the smell of them (plus the fact they're so unhealthy)

So is it worth splurging on an actifry?

We have one and as long as you like fat chips it is very good, if you cut the chips too thin it dries the potatoes out, i set mine for 40 minutes and get perfect chips, i dont know about other foods in it as i dont use it for anything else

IHaveBrilloHair · 18/10/2018 16:10

If you buy the fresh chips from the supermarket, as opposed to frozen they are great, usually in the finest range.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 18/10/2018 16:12

Yep. Use it for chips - cook oven ones in it for 26 minutes, or my own for longer (it takes a while to get the hang of it). And roast potatoes - it makes the best roast potatoes and with only a dash of oil.

I have used it for stir fry and fajitas as well.

We have one and love it. DH likes fat chips, I like mine pretty thin because I prefer them crispy. We dont buy chips we just cut up potatoes. But definitely recommend the actifry.

IAmGrootGrootGroot · 18/10/2018 16:39

Ooh, I'm very tempted.

So it's not much use for McDonald's style French fries?

I had one. Didn’t think it was great. And they’re massive so take up loads of room in the cupboard.

IAmGrootGrootGroot · 18/10/2018 18:02

Ahh, that may be a problem, I don't have the biggest kitchen 🤔

Anyone have any other ideas on how to make delicious chips?

Yes - we love it, use it at least twice a week! It's best for fresh potato chips with the skin left on. We also use for little roasted new potatoes!

The time they take depends on the weight of the veg you use. I don't think it smells bad, nothing like a deep fat fryer as you only use a teaspoon or so of oil.

All the bits go in the dishwasher which is useful. Firm favourite in our family.

I wouldn't be without my actifry, I cook everything in it - chips, wedges, roasties, sausages, chops, burgers, chicken portions, onion rings, mushrooms, tomatoes, bacon - all with 15ml olive oil at the most.

picklemepumpkin · 18/10/2018 19:16

I've got an own brand one, £40, and love it. It doesn't have a paddle.

I use it for oven chips, samosas, any frozen nibbles, sausage rolls, frozen roast potatoes, bacon...

It's clean, fast, doesn't stink the house out, and things taste nicer from it.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 18/10/2018 19:20

So it's not much use for McDonald's style French fries I've just cooked some Tesco Fresh fries in it and they were very nice.

We've got the mega family sized one, It doesn't fit in a cupboard but we use it 4 days a week just with potatoes

jenniuol · 18/10/2018 19:38

I have one and hate it 🙈 it’s a great white elephant in the kitchen. I packed it away recently as we just didn't use it. Could never seem to get the timing/thickness of the chips right no matter what I did. Can’t belive I spent £100 on it Blush

Mum2jenny · 18/10/2018 19:44

Yes but it's in the attic!

LoisEinhorn · 18/10/2018 20:17

We buy frozen French fries and they come out lovely. The best ones are McCain. You dont need to add any extra oil.
Wouldn't be without our actifry

StartingGrid · 18/10/2018 20:22

I had an actifry till it blew up. Got a phillips airfryer after that and much preferred it!

Novia · 30/10/2018 09:31

I tried roasting chestnuts in my actifry last week - turned out brilliantly! Just score the shells with a cross (or they explode), soak for an hour, then drain and put them in the machine for about 25 mins (or till you can see they've opened/look crispy! Much better than oven method.

pinkfluffybunny · 30/10/2018 09:41

We had an actifryin which I only cooked chips. We really think the chips were that great. It was a big thing to have on the worktops, was heavy and loud. So I sold it and bought a compact one made by tower. Was so much cheaper, smaller to have on the worktop and less noisy. It has a drawer that you pull out. There is no paddle, so you have to shake the food around every so often, but that's no big deal. It seems to make better chips and roast potatoes in than the actifry, and I also put frozen garlic slices in and frozen Yorkshire puddings in when time is very tight.

So would definitely recommend a cheaper alternative.

pinkfluffybunny · 30/10/2018 09:41

Argghhh, meant that the chips were not that great in the actifry 🙄
