Hanky Pankys - pancake shop, lots of (pancake) choice and nice tea and coffee!

Hickory's Smokehouse for amazing BBQ food and Fiesta Havana for Mexican. Just try and eat earlier/ for lunch at Fiesta Havana if you are with children as it is really packed in the evening and hard to get through the crowds to get out. They both also do amazing cocktails.

Also, got for a walk around the wall and look at the ruins. It has some amazing views.

Child free so not restricted in any way 😃

Definitely recommend Opera Grill to eat, the Oddfellows is pretty cool too!

hugoagogo · 18/10/2018 17:28

Don't forget to walk around the walls, visit the museums and feed the squirrels in the park.
I love Chester it is so unspoiled and less touristy compared to other historic cities.

I went there eleven years ago now, love to go back! Anyway, try The Watergate, it has a sort of basement restaurant. It's really cool and the food was nice. Halloween Smile

I live here!!
The library/theatre is nice; it’s called story house and also had a small cinema.
The zoo is amazing.

borisinajohnson · 18/10/2018 17:42

Thanks! Sounds like there will be loads to do! Have just booked the opera grill!

In opera ask to be upstairs it’s much nicer

There is a free tour of the cathedral twice a day, and also there is a tour of the cathedral tower and "behind the scenes" for £8 I think. It is excellent, I have done it twice. The walking tours are also excellent with really knowledgeable guides. St John's church is also fascinating if you're into history.

My favourite places to eat are Joseph Benjamin and Chef's Table, and Sticky Walnut if you don't mind going a bit out of the centre. With a drink in the Grosvenor's champagne bar beforehand preferably.

As well as the walls and park, you can walk down by the river and over the suspension bridge to the Meadows. Or the other way and along the river to the racecourse.

Hope you had s good time!

We visited Chester in the summer for a few days. It’s a beautiful town.
The shopping is great and all the shops are in really old character buildings (called the Rows) lovely to stroll around even if you don’t want to shop.
The cathedral was lovely, really interesting and the amphitheater was cool too.
Walk around the Roman walls.
The Story House cinema/theatre/arts centre had a nice cafe but there are lots of places to eat or just grab a coffee.
Have a lovely time!

Ooh, haven't been to Chester for far too long! There was a programme on about it (Dr Alice Roberts, IIRC) and, although it's not the most exquisite of culinary delights, if you like history, you might want to pop into Spud-U-Like (even if just for a drink). They have Roman remains that you can see in the basement!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/10/2018 16:11

Ah, I just had a search for it and it turns out that it closed a few months ago. Ah, well, whatever replaces it - go there!

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 22/10/2018 17:26

Watching this as I go to Chester once a near as DH follows car racing and there’s an event nearby.

If you like shopping, Cheshire Oaks is nearby and you can get a bus to/from it. We ate at Atina Kitchen last time, lovely Italian restaurant. The time before that was a Wetherspoons burger. Grin it’s a lovely city to walk around.

I was really disappointed with Opera and would pick Upstairs at the Grill instead.

PawneeParksDept · 22/10/2018 20:46

I came on to say Upstairs At The Grill, I have a very posh Chester friend who raves about it.

For lunch / cake I'd recommend The Flower Cup or Mad Hatters

Nononononono33 · 22/10/2018 21:24

I’m so lucky to live near Chester. Haven’t tried Opera Grill but fingers crossed for you that it is good. I second Mad Hatters cafe on Bridge St if you fancy coffee or lunch in the day. It just round the corner from Opera Grill and it does he most amazing cupcakes. Mmm, Rolo ones... also, I think the Christmas market opens towards the end of November if that isn’t too late for you. Small market but some lovely stalls.

Rolandrat12 · 22/10/2018 22:03

We walked out of Opera on Saturday. Staff too preoccupied with keeping their boobs from falling out of their tiny dresses and forgot me and the hubby were waiting to be seated. Shame because looks lovely inside.

Mrskeats · 24/10/2018 12:43

Really roland? That’s awful. We like piccolinos and have usually had good service there. Also like artichoke and The Yard.

Myrnafoy · 24/10/2018 13:04

Is Chester a bit like York ? Love York but nearer to Chester.

Whatthefunk · 24/10/2018 13:05

I live very near to Chester and the absolute, best place to eat is Joseph Benjamin's. Westminster park and the Amphitheatre, are lovely for a stroll. Riverside, near Westminster bridge, is great for people watching. Wonderful city

Mrskeats · 24/10/2018 13:27

Yes it’s a bit like York.

madmum5811 · 24/10/2018 13:38

Opera Grill upstairs ok not a nice view though, otherwise, like a school canteen so noisy but not in a good way, also gloomy. I love Sergios up by the cathedral italian buzzing need to book. Piccolinos also ok.
