Oilskin food wraps. Had a shock at the price!

I saw some of these when shopping today and I've been thinking about cutting down on my use of clingfilm recently - and plastic in general. These seemed like a good place to start

Crucially I didn't check the price and just slung two packs of three cloths into my trolley - and got quite the shock when it came to paying

So my question. Anyone using them? And why are they so expensive?!

I have 'Bee's Wraps'

I know it's a dull topic

I looked at these on line after hearing about them on here. They are very expensive! I use tupperwear instead.

They’re quite easy to make. Pm me if you want to know how.

Stasher bags are really good (via amazon, John Lewis) if you're interested in this sort of thing. Again not cheap - but I find I am using them all the time for packed lunches and storing stuff in the fridge. You can also cook in them (microwave/boil in pan). I invested in them as I felt I'd get more use out of them than the wrap thingies.

sorry, poss not the most helpful comment as you've already parted with the cash!

NannyR · 18/10/2018 14:33

As the pp said, they are really cheap and easy to make yourself. You can buy the beeswax on amazon and repurpose used, clean cloth. There are lots of YouTube videos showing how to make them.

Having had a look online I can see why you'd have got a shock at the till! But they are reusable so over time the cost per use will come down. And they can be composted which you can't do with cling film.

BatFacedOK · 18/10/2018 14:42

Ooh I might look at making them. Or err someone doing it for me as I'm not crafty

Well I've used a couple to wrap cheddar and also feta and I have to say I'm impressed. I didn't think they'd 'seal' but they do. All seems airtight to me

And I'm not an eco warrior at all. Quite the opposite but even I am thinking about maybe cutting down on plastic a bit. Stopped buying straws recently and now I'm taking another step with these HUGELY PRICEY oilskins.

I wrap all my youngest's packed lunch in cling film .. so his sandwich, biscuit, piece of cheese. I'll use these now but can you imagine if he just tosses them away without thinking?

You've left the key information: how much were they?!

BatFacedOK · 18/10/2018 14:51

I was tempted to buy some as feel so bad about the amount of Ziploc we get through. However was put off by the fact that you can only wash them in cold water and they wear out eventually. So bought some of these instead. Not as sexy granted but they are fab.www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/dp/B071JY6V6C/ref=asc_df_B071JY6V6C56314711/?hvlocphy=9046617&linkCode=df0&hvnetw=g&hvadid=256184816614&creative=22122&creativeASIN=B071JY6V6C&hvpos=1o1&hvdev=m&hvtargid=pla-540992015672&hvrand=15113902667289608377&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum--chat-3398327-oilskin-food-wraps-had-a-shock-at-the-price" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/dp/B071JY6V6C/ref=asc_df_B071JY6V6C56314711/?tag=googshopuk-21&creative=22122&creativeASIN=B071JY6V6C&linkCode=df0&hvadid=256184816614&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15113902667289608377&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046617&hvtargid=pla-540992015672

BatFacedOK · 18/10/2018 15:13

Yes they look good if they're easy to get dry?

I was a bit put off by the washing in cold water only but you don't store meat in them so I think a quick rinse off will suffice. You can use washing up liquid too

£19.99 per 3 pack? So you spent £40? Oof! I see what you mean.

I salve my conscience re sandwich bags by reusing them to bag up cat poo from the litter tray. Can't abide cling film.

BatFacedOK · 18/10/2018 15:33

Yes it was the unexpected ness of it! I thought they'd be... actually I have no idea! I should have checked of course
