What's the law regarding parking with all four wheels on a public foot path?

Pain in the arse parent picking their kid up keeps parking their car and leaving it completely up on the pavement. Hard to squeeze past it. Same car every day, same spot.

Non emergency police? Or is this not illegal?

It would be a shame if you had keys sticking out your handbag and accidentally scratched it while passing next time...

You could phone your local council parking and ask them if there is anything they can do, or take a photo and email the school?

Its causing an obstruction if you have to squeeze past it. I assume no wheelchair or mobility scooter could get past either.

Report to the school if its the same offender. If it continues, report to the police.

It was announced in the summer that this is to become against the law in Scotland.

Satsumaeater · 17/10/2018 16:13

The law needs to be changed everywhere barring estates where it is part of the design that people park on the pavement. I shouted at a lady yesterday evening when walking home because she drove onto the pavement I was walking along. She must have seen me walking towards her. I don't know what possesses people other than pure laziness.

If they are doing it every day I would have a word with the local PCSO (if you have them in your area) and ask them to pay a visit at school kicking out time to speak to the offender!

llangennith · 17/10/2018 16:48

It's only not illegal if there's sufficient room for pedestrians to pass safely on the pavement.

RandomlyChosenName · 17/10/2018 16:51

I believe some councils have made it illegal too, so worth checking on council website?

Verbena87 · 17/10/2018 16:54

The law according to me is ram your janky old metal-framed pushchair past it on the pavement even though there isn’t really room. Did this recently as I wasn’t prepared to push sleeping baby into the road right by a blind bend and, oh how sad and terrible, it left a big long scratch down 2 shiny bmw doors. My heart bled Wink

Contact your pcso. Every time. With a picture.

Sorry, had to do dinner. Thanks for replies.

Not enough room for a wheel chair or pushchair to get past without going into the road. So a true obstruction then. Frankly even without it's easier to walk out into the road than squeeze between this car and the big high wall which is there.

The pavement on the other side , for info, is stupidly narrow; literally only about 2 foot wide. At school time the cars which park that side put 2 wheels up (to keep road clear, so understandable) which makes the pavement that side really teeny, and it has a prickly holly hedge beside it. In theory you should be able to use the other side ... but there's this entitled wanker using it for their own personal parking space! Rant!!

I didn't think of telling the school. They won't know who the parent is though will they? I'll take a photo tomorrow and tell the PCSO on the village site. I was hesitant to ring 101 because of the mumsnet hatred of doing so i wsn't sure it was right.

I've heard about it only being actually illegal in London. Astounding really.

It's Northants county btw. I'll check the website.

Their site refers you to the highway code ...

I wouldn’t advocate ‘accidentally’ scratching the car with keys as you walk past as another poster suggested.

Yes they are selfish twats for parking on the pavement but causing damage to their property is a crime and could land you in trouble with the police.
Two wrongs don’t make a right.

NWQM · 17/10/2018 18:48

You could put out a plea on local Facebook pages to ask them to stop. Our school has been know to name and shame car owners .... name as in picture of car. It seems to work.

Laiste · 17/10/2018 19:13

NWQM - Our school has been know to name and shame car owners

Ooh really? I might just mention it to ours then. It's a primary, so lots of pushchairs and parents.

I've tweeted our PSCO. He's a busy guy around the village. Tweets almost every day. I never knew! I'll update if/when something changes.

I've had good results with the same problem by using fixmystreet- you could try that.

I complained so often I got an email asking me not to. Shortly afterwards the car stopped doing it.
