Can anyone talk me through a self breast examination please?

Please don't tell me to Google it. I'm worried as it is. My right hand boob has been very itchy in one spot I have just been putting moisturiser on and not really paying much attention. We all get itchy boobs (I hope ). But earlier as I was sat on the loo nearly naked due to wearing a onesie I noticed it looked a bit bruised and there's a kind of indentation (it's hard to explain.) My boob sort of just goes in on one side which I never noticed before. It doesn't hurt and my boobs have always been bumpy and lumpy anyway. I'm 39 and very fat. But have lost 5 stone so maybe it's that?
Does anyone know how to check properly please? GP appointment are like gold dust and don't want to waste time with what could just be a lumpy tit.

If the skin is puckering or there is an indentation then I would get an appointment.

Definitely see your GP just to check Op. Can you feel a lump?

AviatorShades · 17/10/2018 15:51

To feel for changes in your boob - use the palm of your hand and slowly move it from the armpit side to the nipple, Do that all over the breast. You should be able to feel any thickening if it's there.

But you say that you have naturally lumpy breasts? Certainly visit your GP who may well refer you on to a Breast Care Clinic for a more thorough examination, including a scan.

It's important, OP and worth it for your peace of mind at least. All the best.

Make sure you get a gold dust appointment as that’s a change, an itch, dimpling etc should all be checked out as are signs in themselves, there doesn’t need to be a lump. Of course it’s likely not to be anything but make sure you get a GP appointment, it doesn’t matter if they are like gold dust, it needs ruling out, for your health and stress too!

On the subject though does anyone have a good video on self examination? I looked on YouTube and they all say different things from using the tip of your fingers to neber using the tips

Do you know what I'm so daft at times. Of course I'll make an appointment.
Needed a shoe up the backside.

Good to hear, hope all is well OP.

I was told to lie down so the breast flattens as much as poss.

But a GP appointment is the way to go for this methinks!

Wolfiefan · 17/10/2018 19:12

It’s not daft. Probably nothing. But best to get it checked out.
Good wishes from another lumpy boobed woman. (Completely benign. Been checked!) I also had lost weight and was about your age when I found it.

YerDaSellsAvon · 05/11/2018 12:18

I went for a check up and my GP found two lumps. She said they're probably nothing to worry about but has referred me to a breast clinic to be on the safe side. Thanks to those who commented. X

Another 39 year old here with a benign lumpy boob - I have a permanent mass (cluster of small cysts). I was absolutely terrified when I found it though, even though the nurse said it didn't feel sinister. That two week wait was a bit daunting but here are two things I found helpful - try not to google too much but if you do write down one (reputable) stat that you find comforting - e.g. 90% of lumps are benign - on a post it note or type it into your phone and look at it if you start to panic. Also, resist the urge to keep feeling the lumps just to check - there's no point now you're getting seen at the breast clinic and they'll get sore. Good on you for getting it seen to and best of luck!

YerDaSellsAvon · 05/11/2018 14:50

Thanks Cabbage and Cheddar. I think because there were two and were a bit tender she thinks they'll probably be cysts.
