School have lost dd's necklace

DD borrowed a laptop from school this morning and was asked to hand in a valueable item, she handed in her necklace.
They didnt have it when she returned the laptop and she's just been told to come back at the end of the day to see if someones returned it which isnt likely.

What should we expect the school to do in looking for it? If they don't find it should they be replacing it or are they not required to do that?

Its pretty expensive and we let dd take it with the risk of her losing it herself which would obviously be her fault but the office were supposed to be looking after it in return for her looking after their laptop.

Well that seems like a stupid system! If it isnt returned by the end of the week I would ask them to replace it.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 17/10/2018 14:12

Perhaps it depends on the ruling about jewellery in school. Many schools say that only stud earrings may be worn and must be removed for PE.

Are you thinking that it’s been stolen by someone other than the person who was looking after it?

Neptunesgiraffe · 17/10/2018 14:13

I've never heard of a system like this before. Sounds ridiculous. Anyway, since that's the system they operate, their insurance should pay for the necklace.

Get them to replace it. If DD lost the laptop am sure she would have to replace it.

Either way it is their responsibility to give valuable back if asked to look after it

thereallochnessmonster · 17/10/2018 14:14

So if you borrow a school laptop you have to give the office something valuable? What if you don't have anything on you? What a bonkers system.

How old is dd?

If school have lost it, I'd expect them to replace it.

But imo it's pretty daft to let kids wear/take in expensive items to school.

JollyAndBright · 17/10/2018 14:15

The school required collateral to lend items to student?

That seems like a very dodgy system.

PhilomenaButterfly · 17/10/2018 14:17

Exactly Neptunes.

CrochetBelle · 17/10/2018 14:18

Who have you spoken to at the school about this?

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 17/10/2018 14:18

As it was lost while in their care they should really be replacing it.

TeenTimesTwo · 17/10/2018 14:19

Are you sure?
Is there any chance she lost the necklace and is making this up?

BitchyChuckle · 17/10/2018 14:19

I would more likely say that your dd lost it. Sorry if I’m wrong

GeoffreysCat · 17/10/2018 14:20

Crazy system! I guess she should hold the laptop to ransom until they return her necklace then.

upsideup · 17/10/2018 14:22

Her school accepts 'One necklace/locket – Worn inside the blouse' so its nothing to do with that.

You have to hand in 'a valueable' to borrow a laptop which you get back when you return the laptop, I think this is because people were taking them home/ dumping them around the school and they were getting lost.

I’d be calling to speak to her Head of Year with a complaint.

I agree it’s a ridiculous system.

In these circumstances I’d expect it to be replaced - they lost it.

civicxx · 17/10/2018 14:25

That is absolutely pathetic. What if child didn't have a valuable item? How old is DD, she she hand the laptop back in?

I would expect school to replace no matter the cost of necklace as i am sure that if DD lost laptop they would be asking you to replace?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 17/10/2018 14:25

You have to hand in 'a valueable' to borrow a laptop which you get back when you return the laptop, I think this is because people were taking them home/ dumping them around the school and they were getting lost.

That's such a strange policy, I've never heard of it in any other school. What happens if you have nothing valuable or does the definition of valuable change depending on each student's financial background?

I would start by ringing the school and asking where these items are normally stored, surely if it is a policy they must have a designated safe storage area?

upsideup · 17/10/2018 14:28

DD rang me at lunchtime (yes, I know that is probably against the rules).
It's very unlikely she would lie about it, she knows if she lost it then she wouldnt be in trouble and would get in replaced at christmas but would be in serious trouble if she lied about the school losing it.

I would contact the head to be honest, and wondering if one of the office staff took a fancy to it. Call now so it can be checked before staff leave!

Agree with above, I assume they would keep necklace if she lost the laptop so same rules apply!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 17/10/2018 14:32

I think you definitely need to call and discuss it as soon as possible with someone senior as if someone in the office has taken it they need to talk to them before they have the chance to leave and remove it from school.

The necklace should have been put somewhere safe if there policy is to take a valuable item off of the student. If there is no set place to store these items then anything handed in could go missing.

Iaimtomisbehave1 · 17/10/2018 14:36

Does their insurance cover the valuables they take from students? They need to pay for it. The school is open still; are you able to go down and speak to them in person? They need to replace the necklace and then they need to rethink the policy. Raise it with the PTA/school council etc.

EK36 · 17/10/2018 14:36

I would contact the school and tell them that youre not happy about it.

CrochetBelle · 17/10/2018 14:37

I take it that these 'deposits' are recorded somewhere?

MapleLeafRag · 17/10/2018 14:37

You would think they would have a loans book/spreadsheet and a lockable place to put pupils' valuable items. Foolish not to.

In any case it sounds like a stupid system!
