I'm wondering how others have dealt with similar situations. I'm aware from other posts that A levels can usually be changed after actually starting 6th Form College, which is good considering how changeable indecisive DD suddenly now is.
It's her life & we will support whatever decisions she makes, but I'm concerned by some of her behalf around this decision. She seems to have been sticking her head in the sand, hiding information from us in that she doesn't want to deal with & then big panic ... & worryingly a big turn around in her choices, with no real clue what career path this combination could possibly lead her on if she doesn't change her mind again😐 for the sake of not drip feeding, she also has health problems, which though not visible, can restrict her at times & probably on her way to a HFA/Aspergers diagnosis
Looking for any advice, ideas or reassurance on that really 😐
She's was always previously interested in studying medicine or forensics, with a particular love of biology. Recently dropped triple science as we realised that she didn't get along with the teacher to the point it was affecting her in class, losing interest, frustrated & spent most of the lesson quietly wound up. Lots of comments about her not participating in class enough, which DD tries hard to do, but especially hard with anxiety & especially this teacher as she feels they can be quite belittling, we weren't impressed when we met this teacher either. We had hoped the switch of class would rekindle her enthusiasm for science & it has to a degree, but it turns out now, not enough for her to want to take any of them at A level. Similar story with maths, though there her massive anxiety around maths is based in problems in primary school, she's actually doing very well in it, but it's never good enough for her, so she won't take it at A level.
She is now looking at choosing...
English is a big strength of hers, so she's determined to do the double a English A level, that one makes perfect sense as she will likely do very well in it & lives the subjects too.
Psychology, because she enjoys it, but it's a new GCSE she is currently taking, so it seems a bit of an unknown quantity & her grades in it don't seem as strong as other subjects such as biology.
Textiles. She dropped Art in favour of photography for GCSE & the Textiles GCSE was dropped by the school, so I'm guessing she won't need the GCSE to get onto this A level course. Given that it's my profession, I'm pretty sure we could get passed that anyway as she's grown up around all things Textiles. Though I'm concerned at how little interest she has shown in this in recent years, but when she does try, & she has a natural talent for it. That said, I can't honestly say that she's particularly creative now, in that she is never interested in creating anything anymore, but now wants a creative carrier, but has no idea what. She's definitely a very creative thinker & problem solver though, plus creatively very capable when she puts the effort in, but is very out of practice & has fallen behind where she was creatively in as far as arts & crafts go.
Any of you gone through this & how did it work out??
I did choose creative over academic, but I lived & breathed arts & crafts as a kid. She has always been about science, maths & to a degree creative writing, which is something she does excel in, but basically she's always looked to an academic career & has suddenly changed her mind, which is what concerns us a bit.
Is the possible ASD playing a part here, or do all teens go through this indecision & sudden about turns these days ?? How can we help her ?
So we now have a DD who all her life has wanted to study science, probably maths too & now doesn't want to at all, but has no real idea what she does want to do as an end goal, Other than knowing she needs to do a live to work type job that will challenge her mentally & pay heed to her limitations health wise, so nothing too physical, or over hot or cold & now, more recently want a creative career.
If she does stick with these choices, what sort of degrees & career options could English, Textiles & Psychology A levels open up for her. ??
Arts careers & degrees were all about Arts, English & Biology back in my day, so I'm worried dropping Biology in favour of Psychology, might not be the best thing for a creative direction either
TIA 💐
