Fancy a bit of new telly tonight? There She Goes BBC4 10pm

I've just spotted a new 5-part series starting on BBC4 tonight at 10pm till 10.30pm - that's Tuesday 16.10.18 onwards.

I can't do a link - fingers crossed someone else will - but there's an interesting review in The Guardian: There She Goes - a brutal new comedy busting motherhood myths.

I've posted in SN Chat, but think it's got a broader appeal.

I'll be watching - hopefully! Will you join me?

Thank you Elfride. It's very kind of you to say so. I have to let you into a secret though - we're really not amazing. We're just parents, doing our best, just like you, just like most parents. I'm really glad you got something from the first episode, and I hope you keep watching and spreading your awareness around. Thanks for the flowers and drink though - always very welcome here, along with Brew, Cake and 🍫. Smile

Just watched the trailer and it made me cry. The bit where they are carrying her - that's something I've had to do far too often in the past few months with 4 yo DD (ASD).

I really want to watch it but am not feeling quite up to it this week, hopefully it will stay on catch up for a while.

Good that it's raising some awareness. I'm a lurker on the SN boards, will head over there now...

I saw the trailer and couldn’d Understand what the mother was saying. After all the dramas filmed in the dark we now have mumbling in a strong regional accent.
I loved The A Word and looked forward to another story about living with a SeN child but this one is apparently incomprehensible.

Are you sure it was the right one? Jessica Hynes is the mother and doesn't have a strong regional accent.

Just a reminder that it's curtain up tonight in 20 minutes Smile

Just a note that Episode 3 is being repeated tonight on BBC4 at 10.35pm. It's apparently the usual repeat slot for the series.

I have to agree with hazeyjane, almond - I don't have any difficulty understanding the actor playing Mum in There She Goes. She doesn't have a strong regional accent, so I wonder what has happened there.

I think There She Goes is better than The A Word. Although I enjoyed The A Word too, I find There She Goes more realistic and focused on the child and family, rather than having several subplots.

If you liked The A Word and are interested in family life with a more severely disabled child then I can definitely recommend There She Goes.

Hello LittleSwede.

It sounds like you need a Major Buggy or something similar?

We're a good few years further along than you on this unexpected journey, but I remember those early days very clearly and can identify with your feelings just now. With the benefit of hindsight, I would say the sooner you find your tribe and join up the better. There's so much to be said for having contact with families you identify and fit in with, and can gain support from - and that's mutual, of course. You'll come to things in your own time though, and it does take time. I'm getting better at feeling the fear and doing it anyway. By this, in this instance, I know that I will feel upset at times watching There She Goes, but what I get out of it - including the laughs and kinship - makes it worthwhile.

Looking forward to you popping up on the SN boards. BrewFlowers

Thank you for your kind words Wonderboy, you are definitely right that I need to find my tribe. I have gotten very close to joining a local FB group and am looking at coffee mornings. As you say though, it takes time.

We did get a buggy this summer which is helping and will look at the Maclaren Major as the next step when DD gets too big for this one.

Just read through the There She Goes thread in the SN board and did feel that watching it would probably bring a bit of kinship. A lovely discussion there between parents who've been there. Smile

A reminder that episode 4 of There She Goes is on BBC4 tonight at 10pm:

The Wrong Grandad
Simon's mum and step-dad want to take Ben to Devon for 3 weeks, which causes Emily and Simon to wonder why they don't want to take Rosie.

Episode 5 of 5
Tuesday 13 November 2018 on BBC4 at 10pm

Ben
Rosie is incredibly excited - Gandalf is finally coming because there is going to be a birthday with lots of presents! It doesn't matter to Rosie that it's Ben's birthday. The extended family set off for a birthday meal.

For the uninitiated, the first four 30-minute episodes of this StarStarStarStarStar series are currently available on BBC iPlayer.

I'm just watching episode one on iPlayer, brilliant, absolutely brilliant Smile. Ahhhh, the driving of short distances, the annoying 'well meaning' comments from family, the neighbours with NT child, the stair gates, the list goes on!

LittleSwede · 13/11/2018 19:12

Oh, and the actress playing Rosie, wow!

WonderBoy · 13/11/2018 20:55

So glad you managed to start watching, LittleSwede. You're braver than you think. Hoping to see you over on the SN Chat thread (just for parents or close family members of children a bit or a lot like Rosie). You'd fit right in.

Thanks OP, I'm building myself up to watching it. Like a PP, I have a 4 year old DD with asd. We have had a very tough couple of weeks and have been told yesterday by her mainstream school that despite everything they're trying nothing's working and they recommend a more specialist environment.
I'm feeling quite delicate atm but when I'm feeling less emotional about it all I will definitely tune in!

LadyLuna16 · 14/11/2018 19:32

Daisy I hope you get something from it if you do watch it. We are a few years down the line with our DD being nearly 10., so are more accepting of our reality and know what our reality is now. They years of wondering what will happen are pretty hard to take.

My DD was in mainstream and moved to a specialist school for year 4 and it has been the most wonderful thing. They know what to do with her for a start :) and she is happier and more relaxed and as a result so are we.

Good luck with everything.

WonderBoy · 20/11/2018 18:05

It's a shame that we haven't got another episode to look forward to tonight.

I hope that you do manage to watch the series Daisychains, and like LittleSwede you're very welcome to join us over on the SN Chat thread - I'm sure you'd fit right in too.

I remember those times very well. Wishing you all the best Flowers
