...chicken pox more than once??
So many anecdotes and people saying yes my daughter had it twice, but then I have some other friends who very confidently say no you can’t.
Does anyone know the answer?
Thank you

Yes of course you can, it’s just not very common. My daughter has had it twice and the first time quite badly.

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 16/10/2018 13:45

Most people can't. Some unfortunates just don't pick up immunity the first time.

So for any given individual, the chances are overwhelming that they won't be able to catch it twice. But when you look at it on a population level there's a small but non-zero number of people who will.

NorthernRunner · 16/10/2018 13:46

It just seems to be a lot more common than nhs suggest, they describe it as very rare but there are so many anecdotes suggesting otherwise.
I’m pregnant and have never had it, but my dd did last Christmas, however she was very lucky, she wasn’t covered, I’m just hoping she doesn’t get it again.

I believe that my DS may have had it twice. The first case was really really mild, like maybe 6 spots, at a time when it was going round the school like wildfire. But he had all the other symptoms. I had hoped that was enough for immunity but about two years later, he really got it.

Blackladybug · 16/10/2018 13:50

My DD has has it 3 times. BUT each time she's had about 10 spots and not really suffered.

MrsSpenserGregson · 16/10/2018 13:53

My DD has had it 3 times (so far; our GP said you can have it up to 5 times!). Apparently there are 5 very very slightly different strains, and if you catch it for the first time when you are less than 1 year old, your body may not pick up enough immunity to cope with all 5 strains. Hope I've explained that properly?! DD was really poorly with it the first time, but she was only 8 months old and clearly didn't become immune ....

fenneltea · 16/10/2018 13:53

My DD has had it twice, but had had chemo which would have zapped her immune system, it's not common I don't think.

Troels · 16/10/2018 14:01

Yes Dd had it twice. She also was already vaccinated before the first time.
