..(other than this post). Looking for some inspiration for books, mags, blogs...

Just downloaded a book via Overdrive about the Chernobyl disaster. I was born in December 1986 so don't really know much about it.

@susurration I finished that recently and sobbed through most of the book but was so beautifully written. I’ve just binge read my way through the trilogy of Crazy Rich Asians which I thought were really good and I want to see the film now.

Allyg1185 · 16/10/2018 19:19

A stranger in the House by Shari Lapena

lljkk · 16/10/2018 20:22

I just finished skimming this. I basically had read all the material before so didn't read it carefully. It brought home to me that news stories now are about the narrative, not the facts. Sadly nothing in this that convinces me that BS won't continue to rule the roost.

I’ve sped through

A Force of Nature
Eleanor Oliphant etc
Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

All really good and I need a new one

Shampaincharly · 16/10/2018 20:27

The Mowgli Stories , ( Jungle Book )
Rudyard Kipling

offtheshoulder · 16/10/2018 20:31

I'm also reading Crazy Rich Asians, which is enjoyable tripe Blush

MsAwesomeDragon · 16/10/2018 20:34

I've just finished Wool, Shift and Dust by Hugh Howey. It's a post apocalyptic trilogy and I was hooked right from the start.

I'm now reading 1Q84 by Haruki Murikama. This is a very long book, I think it might be a trilogy that I've picked up in one volume. It's very good so far, but very, very strange. I think it's going to be quite difficult to follow the story.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 16/10/2018 20:36

Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. I’ve read it before and wanted to revisit.

I only read novels and rarely proper books. I’ve got a lot of free ebook downloads.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 16/10/2018 20:37

@MsAwesomeDragon you’re right it is a trilogy. I’ve read the first two, the third felt like it lost its way a bit.

chapthedoor · 16/10/2018 20:39

The Dry by Jane Harper. I've just started it and it seems good

bluemumsbluedog · 16/10/2018 20:46

I've just finished perfect silence by Helen Fields the latest one in a crime series.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 16/10/2018 20:50

AviatorShades - I hated The Slap, although I really wanted to like it. Did you enjoy it?

But I did like Elizabeth is Missing a lot.

I'm reading a book called (I think) Bear Town which is translated from Swedish (I think) and is all about Ice Hockey. A subject of which I know nothing and care less. But I'm really enjoying the book. It's beautifully written, although quite slow (I'm about a 1/4 through and EVERYTHING is about this big game which is happening tomorrow and it's only about 10am still. But there are some really good lines and observations in it.

My two books of the year so far were Eleanor O and The Power, which was absolutely excellent.

BifsWif · 16/10/2018 20:51

I’ve just finished The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. Two of the best books I’ve read.

I’ve also read The Storyteller and really enjoyed that too.

hippoherostandinghere · 16/10/2018 20:52

I have also recently read Kite Runner which was amazing. As was the heart's invisible furies.

hippoherostandinghere · 16/10/2018 20:53

And Also have just finished The Rosie project which was pure genuis.

purpleme12 · 16/10/2018 20:56

The Carrier by Sophie Hannah. Just started it so don't know if it's any good yet really but she's one of my favourite authors

whisperinglow · 16/10/2018 20:56

I've just finished The Spy and the Traitor by Ben Macintyre. It's a really gripping read!

MarshaBradyo · 16/10/2018 20:57

I couldn’t get past the second page of The Slap
A shame because I enjoyed the story line for the series

lljkk · 16/10/2018 21:01

I don't understand a whole book on the storyline The Slap.
2 families disagree about how to deal with a brat & then as part of their subsequent row, all their long term dirty laundry gets aired (along with their history & friends' dirty laundry).
At least I think that's the plot synopsis.
I can't understand how this could be remotely interesting.

DS has got some teen fiction for me to read, Predator or some such fluff.

DrDreReturns · 16/10/2018 21:03

Charity by Len Deighton. I've read the previous nine books in the series and this is the last fun. Great stuff if you like spy books.

AviatorShades · 16/10/2018 21:09

Keepservingthedrinks - love your name, btw.Whatever made you think of it?Wink
I've only just started The Slap, so the jury's out atm. Smile

SylvesterTheCat · 16/10/2018 21:59

Mumsnet

MrsTommyBanks · 16/10/2018 22:07

The Thirteenth Tale. Passed onto me by my very DGM who died on Thursday so I'm a bit stuck in the middle right now. To raw to carry on just yet. But its very good.
Eleanor Oliphant was the one I read before. Fantastic book.

MrsTommyBanks · 16/10/2018 22:10

I agree A Thousand Splendid Suns is a beautiful book.
Also Birdsong by Sebastian Faulkes.

UnderHisEyeAndUpYourArse · 16/10/2018 22:14

MrsTommyBanks Birdsong is my favourite book, I reread it every few years, enjoy.

Just finished The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris, it was a difficult read but I'm glad I read it, so important to hear these stories.

Thank you everyone for all of these suggestions!
