When/how to ask?

Have a job interview today. It's for full time but I would like part time.
Has anyone successfully negotiated part time hours for a job advertised as full time? If so how did you do it? Not sure if I should mention it at interview or if offered the job. Really could do with some advice from anyone who has done it or hiring managers on what they think is the best way to phrase my request.

Thanks Smile

Perhaps I've missed something in the course of my working life, but surely you don't apply for a job that's advertised as full time then announce five minutes later you only want to work half that?
I can see you might ask if you could work from home or compressed hours if that was the norm in the specific role, but halving the hours you would be working? Surely that means you would only get roughly half the work done?
Sorry if I've misunderstood, but I would be utterly bemused if you made such a request at interview.

I had an interview terminated when I mentioned part-time! It was HR's fault - they hadn't specified on the job ad and the departmental leader was furious.
The etiquette is:
If they don't mention % on the advert then you don't need to mention it until interview.
If they do, then you need to be honest from the start.

I include it in my application letter. So if they mention X position at 80-100%, then I apply for X position at 50%.

There would be no good way to phrase it to me. If I want full time, it's because I need full time.

I’d say you’re wasting your time. If they’ve advertised for full time then they want full time. They aren’t going to hire you to do half the job then spend time and money re advertising for someone to do the other half. They’ll just hire one of the other candidates who wants a full time job.

Imo this is something that should have been mentioned when you applied so the employer didn’t waste your time and theirs if they’re not willing to offer the job on a part time basis.

I probably should have said that the job can be done part time. I currently do the same job but am applying for the same job just in a different place. Most people in the department ( my current department and the new job) work part time.
It's within the NHS so states they are open to flexible working.

Also should have said I'm hoping for 4 days not massively part time

I assume different workplaces have different practices and it could be a regular thing in your field. However, if we advertised a full time job I would only expect applicants to apply because that’s what they want. I’d be unhappy if they wanted to negotiate part time hours.
