What did you wear when you went to Iceland?

Going first week of November. If you went at a similar time, what did you wear for the following scenarioa:

  1. Day trip to the Golden Circle
  2. Walking around Reykjavik in daytime
  3. Going out in the evening in Reykjavik.
  4. Travelling to the blue lagoon

I don't want to be cold/wet but want to avoid taking too much for a 3 day trip.

I read the thread title and thought you meant Iceland the supermarket! I was coming on to say leggings or jeans with a top Grin

I went in April. Whenever you go the wind is strong. I wore good walking shoes, jeans with thermals under then long sleeve t shirt, overshirt, fleece and down jacket. Gloves, hat and scarf. You need layers, basically. It is warm inside but the wind bites even if it's sunny.

We went in February. I had a down jacket and wore jeans or walking trousers with long thermal underwear. Thermal layers and a jumper on top. Walking boots. Scarf and hat. The buildings are very warm inside so you need to be able strip off a couple of layers indoors.

The centre of Reykjavik has thermal heated pavements so no snow but outlying streets have hard packed slippery snow. Allow more time than you think you'll need at the Blue Lagoon it's amazing. We went on a glacier walk and it was the scariest thing I'd ever done due to melting ice and landslides.

I went December and wore everything I owned - never been so cold - or enjoyed a trip so much. Thermal layers essential and think about how to cover face for when wind chill gets painful

VenusClapTrap · 14/10/2018 20:38

I went in early December last year. It was warmer than it was at home - damp and foggy but not especially cold. I didn’t wear any of the thermals or woolly scarf/hat that I took with me.

I would recommend good waterproof hiking boots, and a decent coat.

EricNorthmanIsMine · 14/10/2018 20:38

I just layered up the same clothes day and night but we didn't eat out anywhere very swanky!

You'll need base layer thermal top and leggings/tights. Top layer thin jumper or long sleeve t shirt, then a thin fleece and separate waterproof and windproof jacket. I wore jeans but technical/walking trousers would be better. Good walking shoes cover all requirements, Reykjavik is quite hilly and paths are slippy in bad weather

You can then combine these depending how warm/cold it is! take hat, scarf and gloves ... we were there last December and it was minus 8 on the goldwn circle tour

Blue lagoon ... just take swimwear and fast walk from the changing room to the pools Grin

Have a fab time !!

Layers as a PP says but not overkill unless you are out at night looking for the Northern Lights or on water.

Reykjavik surprisingly smart in the evening I thought - sort of understated expensive look.

EricNorthmanIsMine · 14/10/2018 20:41

There are northern lights boat trips ... if you go on one literally wear everything you own! Freezing cold but amazing!

RoxytheRexy · 14/10/2018 20:41

Are you going for the Airwaves festival? It’s amazing. You’ll have a fantastic time.

Yes to all the clothes you own. Full thermal base layer, snow boots, big down coat. Fingers crossed for the Northern Lights for you.

pastapestoparmesan · 14/10/2018 20:42

I found it was much more wet than cold (in October) and absolutely boiling indoors everywhere!

MismatchedStripySocks · 14/10/2018 20:42

Ooh we’re going in November, yay! Was planning on thermal trousers, coat, hat and gloves. Got waterproof boots too.

Plentyoffishnets · 14/10/2018 20:42

I would also take a waterproof coat. We went in September and a coat I use throughout winter here and which has never leaked soaked through in less than 5 mins!!! their rain is very wet and the weather changes every 10 mins!!

CadiM · 14/10/2018 20:43

I went in late October and pretty much wore what I was wearing in Scotland: jeans, waterproof jacket, jumper, walking shoes. Wish I had remembered to take my hat to the Blue Lagoon, my hair afterwards was a state and needed hiding. Only time I felt very cold was on the northern lights trip: wasn't even that cold at night (about 1C) but it was the standing around that made it so chilly. I'd wear thermals if I did it again.

CherryPavlova · 14/10/2018 20:44

I went in February. I had moon boots, layers, thermals, good walking coat. Hats and coats but usually got too hot and removed some layers. Wore my swimming costume quite a lot. We didn’t ‘dress up’ at all.
