Berling budget - worrying about forhcoming trip?

Two dc and I are spending 5 days in Berlin over half-term. We're staying in a hostel B&B only, so aside from that cost I wonder how little I can get away with spending. We don't have cooking facilities.

I'm thinking hostel breakfast, sandwich type take-out lunch and then a cheapish hot meal in the evening. Won't be drinking aside from the odd glass with a meal and we'll obviously be visiting attractions.

In the summer I spent about £700 in France (Brittany) for a week (not inc accommodation of course, but we were self-catering then. However, we did have a few meals out and I didn't feel we were scrimping. I'm hoping it's going to be less than that, but I'm aware it's a city and people keep saying it's terribly expensive.

How little do you think I can get away with spending? And if anyone has any tips for inexpensive eateries over there I would also be grateful for those!

There's a lot of curry wurst in Berlin which is cheap. Also, the kebab places are amaaaazing!

DH and I were in Berlin three years ago and it was very cheap. The biggest expenses for us were the entrance fees for Museum Island (totally worth it).

I was slightly disappointed in Checkpoint Charlie, which was very tacky. Apparently that museum is very good but we didn't go in (another entrance fee).

The glass dome above the Reichstag is a must-do (especially at sunset/night) and free, but you need to book.

We found public transport super efficient and very cheap. We certainly didn't eat anywhere fancy but had good meals.

Lots of bakeries everywhere, for breakfast.

This place is good Momos

There are plenty of cheap places.

My DH also insisted on spending half a day in the train station watching the trains go above you on different floors Hmm

I can recommend the Turkish Market for a free thing to do which is also a good place for cheap food: www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g187323-d2229722-Reviews-Turkish_Market-Berlin.html.

We spent less than EUR500 but were staying with friends so didn't eat out as much. We found cheap pizza and sushi places but they were out in the suburbs.

Dada falafel is fairly central, good, quick and not too expensive, if you like falafels!

Rather than buying made sandwiches, we tended to buy rolls then things like sliced cheese to put in them. This was partly because of fussy children not eating sandwiches with salad but was also cheaper.

Like most cities, the further you go from the touristy places the cheaper food is.

When we went to Berlin, I managed to eat so much for breakfast that I didn't need lunch... Don't know if that's an option.

We tend to buy rolls and cheese etc from Lidl to make a picnic lunch.
