my hair is falling out :(

Had blood tests done and they've come back fine. Thyroid is fine,

I thought it might be breakage as I hadn't had it cut in over a year, so had it done, and that's not made a difference its still coming out.

Every time I brush, take a bobble out or wash my hair its just constant.

What can be causing it?

I wish I knew as I'm having the same problem. I used to have very thick beautiful hair and now it's so thin my scalp is showing in spots.

I will be watching this thread and hopefully someone will come along with more advce.

Gotyourback · 14/10/2018 14:08

Mine too Sad I have no idea why. I used to have lovely thick hair, it's now very thin

LewisFan · 14/10/2018 14:11

Mine too. Dr said it's because I'm fat and refused further tests.

The one thing I found helps is Elvive triple protect shampoo (pink writing, black bottle). Savers and Amazon sell it.

Mine turned out to be because of stress, at the time I didnt even realise I was that stressed.

LaCerbiatta · 14/10/2018 14:13

Have you seen your blood test results? You can be borderline anaemic with iron low enough to cause the hairloss but not so low for the dr to be concerned.

Orchidflower1 · 14/10/2018 14:19

Watching with interest. Every time I wash and condition my hair I produce enough hair it looks like a small mouse in the bin! Someone at work mentioned main and tail?!! But I’m a bit wary.

Fluffyears · 14/10/2018 14:25

Mine is the same, bought Waterman’s grow me shampoo and hoping it works x

Rainbowsandrascals · 14/10/2018 14:30

I have a normal Hb (haemoglobin / iron) level but a low stored iron (ferritin) level. My hair falls out due to this. The GP might only have checked your Hb. You could ask them to check ferritin / folate / B12 levels.

OP so sorry to hear about this - it's a real shock isn't it. If you've had blood tests then did the doctor give any diagnosis following these?

A common reason is alopecia. I believe it's not clearly known exactly what causes it, but it's often speculated that it could be stress. Unfortunately there's not a 'cure'. However, sometimes (not sure how often) hair spontaneously re-grows.

My dp has alopecia. Over the last 2 years he has completely lost his hair, all grew back again, then lost it all again and over the last few months it has completely re-grown again. There's no way to tell whether he'll lose it again.

For some people with alopecia it's just a patch of hair that goes - it may persist or re-grow. It might just happen once in their lives. For some people it never re-grows.

I'd suggest asking the doctor about what they think is the cause. There are other reasons for hair loss, so you might very well not have this, but if it is alopecia there's lots of info on the web and support groups.

I think I am perimenopausal and I've noticed my hair coming out more than usual.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/10/2018 14:41

Mine is because I’m dieting.

Butternutissquashed · 14/10/2018 14:45

Me too. No idea why but it’s constant and is now fine and wispy. Iron fine but dr refused to check ferritin level as “no clinical need”.

JuditthIscariot · 14/10/2018 15:09

It could be a vitamin deficiency, low B12 and D can both cause hair loss

DeadCertain · 14/10/2018 15:19

Do you use dry shampoo? I used to use Batiste and noticed a great deal of hair falling out every time I washed it. My hairdresser said that a few people had experienced the same with using Batiste - I also happened across an article about it when researching (Daily Mail!).

Nevth · 14/10/2018 15:26

Hey all - I have the same problem. I was lucky that my GP took me very seriously and ran a wide range of test - which showed nothing, except slightly low Vitamin D (now taking tablets but no change). I'm seeing a rheumatologist next week to rule out auto-immune issues. I've also started looking into Minoxidil (Regaine) and Finasteride, but the latter is not recommended for women due to birth defects so I think I'll struggle to get it prescribed. I have diffuse hair loss, so no bald patches (yet) - is it the same for you all?

Chocolatemum44 · 14/10/2018 15:33

Never posted before, but currently going through this. I'm unfortunate in that I've got 2 potential issues; general thinning all over but also patches of alopecia. Original GP/NHS haven't been great if I'm honest. Now seeing a consultant privately. So, although my original blood test didn't show that I was anaemic, my ferritin level was 5. This measures your iron stores and was immediately spotted by the specialist. I've been on iron tablets since April and had a course of B12 injections (this helps with the absorption of iron). Ferritin levels can range hugely under the term 'normal' but I've been told I'm aiming for 80 so you can see mine were way off! The alopecia has been linked to stress which I just have to accept (have had various things going on in last few years) but it's incredibly difficult not to worry when you can see bald patches in your scalp and yet everyone is telling you not to stress. Bit of a vicious circle really. I've had to have my iron tablets changed as I was having trouble with the original prescribed ones so I'm now taking Ferrous Fumarate. I'm no expert just giving you my own personal experience but I have to say this is one of the most difficult things I have ever been through. Hope this helps OP.

Thinkingofausername1 · 14/10/2018 15:36

Mine too. No advice really

Butternutissquashed · 14/10/2018 17:10

Interesting about the dry shampoo. I’ve been using that to give my hair a bit of volume since I’ve lost so much. Possibly nit helping. Also a B12 and D supplement might help. I’m having problems with pains in my fingers and toes as well - wonder if it is connected, as well as being peri menopausal. It’s a wonder I’ve got any hair left!!!

marciagetscreamed · 14/10/2018 17:15

Philip Kingsley products are amazing. Hair care and supplements made by a trichologist. They are pricey but very good.

Tintini · 14/10/2018 18:41

This is just my opinion, but I would be cautious about the claims of certain products, especially if they are expensive. If there were a single 'wonder' cure out there we would all have heard about it since the potential market for such a product would be phenomenal (especially if you take into consideration how many men experience hair loss).

Of course this doesn't mean that there might not be products that help some people since there must be many causes of hair loss. But it could be an expensive and emotionally painful experience trying them all. It's a really difficult situation.

Squidgee · 14/10/2018 19:51

I do use dry shampoo and I am planning to try a vitamin to see if its that. It could be stress, but I've suffered with stress/anxiety for some years so it seems odd that it would be falling out now.

I did wonder if my medication (gabapentin) might be causing it, or if its a perimenopausal thing (i'm 38)

I had the same problem and eventually after much research I looked for a supplement with Biotin in it. I found Kansha Alchemy and have been using the pills for 6 months and have had great results BUT they also give a free book about hair loss on their website and I tried a few other ideas from the book. One thing I did was massage my scalp which I was afraid to do before incase my hair fell out more - but actually it has made a real improvement. Good Luck.
