Making a beef stew in the slow cooker but I’ve forgotten to get onions Sad

If I substitute leeks instead will it be ruined?

Would be going in with braising steak, carrots and swede, to be served with mashed potatoes in a giant Yorkshire pudding.

Shops don’t open til 10am and we’re going out at 9.30.

Please help, I’ve been looking forward to this dinner all week 🙈

Hello, I make this in the slow cooker st least once a week and have made the same error. It will be fine! If you have a clove of garlic then put it in with the leeks too. If you fry them off together before putting in then it will deepen the flavour and soften the leeks. Maybe you’ll invent your new signature receipe!

It’ll be fine, chuck the leeks in and enjoy later! The flavours all mix in the slow cooker anyway, so it wouldn’t have tasted oniony.

It’ll be fine with leeks, just chop them quite finely. Add some garlic if you’ve got any.

I'm making a beef stew in a slow cooker later and intend to use leeks as I prefer that although they can be a little bit sweeter so don't have too many and as pp says chop them fine as they don't break down like onions do.
I also use that one or two of the thicker outer leaves of th leek flattened out to put across the top of the stew to help protect the top so it doesnt get dried out these can then get chucked away after

Do you have any shallots? They’re lovely in this sort of recipe. I keep a bag of the pre-peeled, frozen shallots in the freezer for just this sort of situation.

It was delicious! My toddler, who usually dodges veg picked his leeks out to eat first! Definitely using leeks instead from now on.
