Stupid ways you've wasted money

Please help me feel better by telling me your tales of money mistakes... I'm so embarrassed and horrified... On Friday I spent £390 on 2 tickets to Mumford & sons... I like them, but not that much!!! And we don't really have the money! It was supposed to be a massive treat. I thought £175 was the total price, there was a big red clock counting down, the kids were at me, I got click happy confirm confirm confirm... There isn't an adequate excuse. The tickets are non-refundable, and if I sell them, I need to go there on the night and hand them over to the buyer which involves a couple of hours drive, paying to park... I can't be the only one to have done something so stupid... can I?!

Smiggle

guiltynetter · 14/10/2018 11:37

@frayedhem that would be my biggest waste of money too! i took my DD to 2 sessions at £35 each, the guy said he’d definitely be able to sort her out ‘in another 6-8 sessions’ i couldn’t afford that so i stopped going. turned out she was allergic to cows milk, i’m sure he couldn’t have sorted that out...

ToesInWater · 14/10/2018 11:38

Same thing happened to DH the other week - a band he had loved forever were touring for the first time in 17 years. He thought the tickets were $300, pressed "buy" and the total cost was $550!!!!! Company based in Switzerland so the usual rules of having to have the last page before you click buy showing the total cost didn't apply! The same tickets from the venue direct would have been $250 but he got caught up in the whole "there are only four tickets left" panic. Luckily the gig was amazing, he felt stupid so I kept my mouth shut.

Lost5stone · 14/10/2018 11:38

£390 on a laser hair removal machine that doesn't work on me people in very fair

CottonSock · 14/10/2018 11:49

A poster above reminded me that I spent £70 on a phone repair, which invalidated the warranty (I thought had run out). Repair failed so new phone 300 on top of the 70.

Haypanky · 14/10/2018 11:59

Ah thank frick not just me! A real life friend has just told me she once wasted £1000 on flights... She thought it hadn't gone through, clicked again, two sets turned up on the post. Took her six months fighting to get some of it back.

I wish I knew how to tag! Yes it was viagogo. I have learnt the hard way. Thanks for sharing that your tickets were £170... I thought mine were! I'm an idiot. But have found a few brethren at least!

Did you see the advice by Lives?
Op you need to google Victims of viagogo, they will help you to get a refund.
It's a scam site. Fight to get your money back.

BusterGonad · 14/10/2018 12:04

Bought some return flights to England, husband didn't check his emails, they changed our flights, I got to the airport self service check in, didn't look at tickets, checked on the flight board that our flight (flight we thought we were in) was in time. Went to the pub for a pint, check board again half way through pint, look at tickets for the 1st time, get confused. Missed our flight. Rang flight company, said they emailed us! Big argument. Have to spend £1000 on 3 more flights that leave in 4 hours. Fuck. Can never relax at an airport ever again now!

Notjustanyone · 14/10/2018 12:12

£550 for a pair of designer shoes. Not a bad price really but I was skint but oh so needed them. They arrived and were beautiful. I wore them once and they crippled me. Tried to sell them but no one wants to pay a decent price of even £300 for shoes worn once! So they are in the loft until one of my girls can have them. Never again!

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 14/10/2018 12:14

We've just spent over 20 minutes waiting at Milton Keynes waiting for our allocated departure time after getting onto an already rammed service.

8 coaches of people crowded onto a packed 4 coach train.

There are people sitting and standing on the floor. Even in 1st Class.

We'll be over an hour late into Euston and I still have to get to Ally Pally.

Never. Ever. Travel. On. Sundays.

Sarcelle · 14/10/2018 12:17

Some of these are making me feel very queasy! The leather trousers for 199.99. I can spend money but if somebody told me something was that much when I thought they were 19.99 I would have no hesitation in saying I had made a mistake. I hope you are wearing them lots!

FirstAidDevice · 14/10/2018 12:21

I’m currently sponsoring 3 Nigerian princes

Haypanky · 14/10/2018 12:26

I have seen about viagogo yep. Seen a whole campaign about it. But I don't think I'll have a leg to stand on. The kids were crying and the clock was counting doesn't sound like great grounds for a claim unfortunately... Some of the advice is to cancel your bank account!!!

Another one for the beginning of ebay when you had to bid for everything.
My sister was an M&M freak and i came across a 1kg bag which was a bit of a novelty back then, i bid $50 as my highest offer thinking it would never get that high! It did apparently.
17 year old jobless me shit myself and had to confess to my mum lol

I also helped my sister order her school formal dress from some chinese site, it looked nice on the site all velvety and slinky. What arrived was some satin monstrosity and we had no time to get anything else lol It was nice enough and she looked great, it was just not what was shown and very bridesmaidey. $200 on what we could have got for $50 at any shop down town

FrayedHem · 14/10/2018 12:27

@guiltynetter well if you'd have seen my cranial osteopath you'd have got sort of the right advice?!?

I also took DS2 to a homeopath for his eczema Blush £30 for a bottle of water. The HV told me his eczema would clear when he was about a year as it was on his face. She was absolutely right.

I bought a metallic silver bomber jacket on holiday in Newquay for £80. I was 19 but still looked ridiculous, never wore it again and I'd overspent so spent the next couple of weeks living on cuppa soups to take to work.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/10/2018 12:28

£70 on one large pot of Farrow & Ball paint. Which I put on the back seat of the car, braked suddenly, it fell off seat, lid came off and it spilt over the car floor. Turned round to go and get another one.

Flobalob · 14/10/2018 12:29

Being talked in to buying a Merino wool swaddle blanket at The Baby show. Pregnant with PFB. Cost about £30 and we used it about once. Couldn't even flog it for a few quid even though it was pristine and still in packaging. An absolute rip off!

FrayedHem · 14/10/2018 12:37

They need to bring back Cash in the Attic for IJustLostTheGame. Or just embrace a fancy trip to the opera in a carriage accessorised with lace bobbins. Wearing light up skates and using a drinking horn. Perhaps not with the crossbow.

captainpantbeard · 14/10/2018 12:40

@Tara336 re Post Office upselling- I worked for them in the early 90s when they started selling scratchcards and there was a training video for counter staff that showed examples of serving customers like “Oh you’re sending a parcel to Australia? If you won on a scratchcard you could take it there yourself” It was fucking dire.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/10/2018 12:50

Last year I spend £270 on a Harry Styles gig ticket, BUT as a massive stroke of luck got £100 back, and tbf I loved every minute of the gig.
I bought a Kitchenaid which is known in our house as, ' the very expensive kitchen ornament', as I can't bake for shit and never use it.

civicxx · 14/10/2018 12:51

£420 on Justin Bieber tickets for my sisters 16s birthday. I actually quite liked the album he was touring but oh my, the venue was full.. full of teenage girls screaming & watching the show through their shit iPhone camera.

Never again.

She enjoyed herself though.

AllAtHome · 14/10/2018 12:54

I would have bought the leather trousers, then returned them for a refund the next day.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/10/2018 12:54

Harry Styles was viagogo btw, I knew the price, just wanted it so badly.
I got a ticket for his tour a few months later for £60.

Shawn Mendes similar, all they had left for that was £140, I'm a dick and bought it anyway.

Didiusfalco · 14/10/2018 13:00

@frayedhem and @guiltynetter you’ve just reminded me of the money I wasted on cranial osteopathy. I honestly think it made no difference, but one of the midwives recommended it Hmm and I was desperate. Paid for more than one session and remember it looked like the most woo thing ever. I think pregnancy hormones and tiredness account for most of my worst money mistakes.

PhilomenaButterfly · 14/10/2018 13:06

To tag, you just put an @ at the front.

@Haypanky for example.
