Gluten Free Shampoo- Am I missing something?

I've just seen advert for Herbal Essences, advertising that their shampoo is Gluten Free. Am I missing something? Does shampoo a) normally have gluten in it? and b) does it matter?

Surely people with gluten intolerance and allergies are not eating their shampoo? Does gluten allergy cause problems if you apply something with gluten in it to your skin?

JeanMichel - The scientific understanding of the pathology around dermatitis herptiformis is pretty solid and is an autoimmune response to gluten sensitivity in the gut. Other reactions may well be occurring but it is not due to contact with gluten on the skin. Gluten is a very large protein and it is not absorbed through the skin, which it would have to to cause the symptoms from dermatitis h. Please send a link if there is a new line of thought around this. No one is laughing - gently mocking maybe but perhaps the hypoxia from your high horse is making you a little defensive

@kaytee87, sounds like a good consultant :-)

@khaleesi71 I'm sorry, my responses probably have sounded a bit snotty, but it's not due to being on a high horse - it's just personally a bit painful due to our own experiences. Apologies 😊

I'm not talking about dermatitis h in our case, as it's not coeliac, but urticaria and other systemic symptoms (Inc gastro) that we'd see on a normal glutening. I'm afraid I don't have any links, but as I've said, we've been told by consultants and dieticians at two leading teaching hospitals that it may be the case that there's a reaction through skin contact and we should avoid...and it looks from this thread, and indeed what I've heard from others in real life, as if we're not alone in receiving the same advice.

Unfortunately there's very little funding for non IgE allergy research (we know this from the medics doing the research), so there are many areas where they think the mechanisms aren't well-understood. That's what we've been told, anyway.

I'll back out of this discussion now....Apologies again if it's all been a bit hoity toity, wasn't my intention Flowers

JeanMichel - I'm sorry that you've had a terrible experience. Finding your way through a new diagnosis is awful (mine was convoluted and frustrating too). The IgE issue seems to be a recurring theme in skin manifestations of autoimmune diseases. So there is much more to do. The irony about self declared gluten 'allergies' is that it is increasing awareness around these conditions. I think my frustration is the increasing silliness, fake news and hysteria around gluten free items (shampoo) which is largely a marketing tool but medicalises the worried well. I hope you can find answers as well 💐

What a kind and understanding response, @khaleesi71. We've been lucky enough to find answers, but it took a long time - I'm so sorry your experience was similar.

Funnily enough, my last post included a separate para saying exactly the same thing re the advert itself, but I deleted it as I was being a bit long-winded. But I quite agree!
