Calling all Lego geeks!

I'm trying to get simpler Lego builds together as my 4yo and 6yo don't play with their Lego that much (the 6yo finds it a bit fiddly, he has some SEN, he makes towers from Duplo; the 4yo arranges lots and lots of blocks on the base plates but does occasionally make cars or "houses"!)

I came across this site

www.buildingexamples.com/

and some of the builds are about the right level but our kits (a few Classic kits plus some Junior and some small City ones) haven't got anything like the right pieces in.

I am looking out for stuff on Ebay - I get the feeling I should be looking for older kits - the Classic, even, has lots of silly bits like eyes and tiny lights that really they don't need.

What vintage/names should I look out for?

Thanks!

Anyone?

You can buy random job lots by the kilo on eBay, that is probably the best way to get lots of classic bricks.

Jack Stone sets were easy to build as they had large pieces. Like a bigger roof instead of building one.

I went to a second had kid's clothes and toy shop and bought about 6 kg of assorted Lego and some bags of special stones (hinges, wings, people etc.).

Have a look around - especially now before Christmas, when parents start sorting their DC's stuff out.

drspouse · 14/10/2018 12:08

I'm not really after a single, easy build set - more generic pieces but anything recent seems to be all funny shaped bits.
E.g. I printed out an elephant pattern but it took 16 of the same 2x2 piece in red and I had about 5.
When I see the local FB selling groups they just have modern kits like this so I'm looking for what older selections might be called.

Wilko sets can be interchanged with Lego

drspouse · 14/10/2018 12:16

I've heard they fall apart easily!
Also they are mainly fiddly bits these days too.

Don't you have a local Lego store? You can buy the bricks individually

paxillin · 14/10/2018 12:24

I just got boxes of bricks for that age. The Lego online shop has one called Lego Classic Bricks Bricks Bricks. 1,500 bricks for £49.99. Then there are the "creative brick boxes", they used to be called tubs I think.

drspouse · 14/10/2018 12:26

We don't have a Lego store anywhere near.
pax do you have a link to that one? All the Classic ones we've got are also mainly fiddly bits!

OP posts:
drspouse · 14/10/2018 12:30

pax is it this one?

www.lego.com/en-gb/themes/classic/products/bricks-bricks-bricks-10717

We don't really need shapes, wheels or eyes!

Bah humbug Lego isn't what it used to be!

OP posts:
paxillin · 14/10/2018 13:04

Yes, it is. It will contain a handful of wheels and roof tiles, but the vast majority will be normal bricks.

paxillin · 14/10/2018 13:04

Wait, there is a list of all bricks somewhere, I'll find it.

paxillin · 14/10/2018 13:11

No, there is no comprehensive list. But these brick boxes are jut that, boxes of lots of bricks rather than sets to build stuff. You could also go to the Lego web page, "pick a brick" and order 100 of one size, 100 of another, it is a bit cumbersome and more expensive, but you would only have only bricks.

drspouse · 14/10/2018 15:40

Oh that's a good idea.

Try this website I've bought from here before when I wanted lots of bricks www.bricklink.com/v2/main.page

Or if you wanted a set we have the xxl creative box. But looking on Amazon they don't seem to sell that anymore, i paid around £35 on black Friday a couple of years ago now. Was mostly bricks and then some eyes.

drspouse · 14/10/2018 16:00

Oh that looks great!

Bit of proofreading would have improved my post.. Here is the pick a brick, lots of pages of just bricks.

IceRebel · 14/10/2018 17:55

I definitely recommend bricklink, there's also another similar site called brick owl.

Also if you know what sort of pieces you want you could try asking Lego groups on facebook, as people on there are often happy to sell specific pieces / parts.

drspouse · 16/10/2018 11:15

I have just spent WAY too much on brickowl.
Oops.

OP posts:
IceRebel · 17/10/2018 07:22

You can never spend too much on Lego Wink

What did you end up buying?

BirthdayPlans · 17/10/2018 07:33

You do know that the standard shaped Lego bricks can be built onto Duplo, don't you?

drspouse · 17/10/2018 10:58

I got a few bits that mean we can do some simple printouts of models all in the same colour, and then a whole load of 2x2 and 2x4 and a few others in different colours.
So much more useful than wheels and eyes!
And Birthday I did not know that.

OP posts:
safariboot · 17/10/2018 11:39

Yeah, Lego nowadays tends to have more detailing parts and fewer big bricks. More colours too. I've actually read that the Minecraft sets are good for getting 2x2 and 2x4 bricks. Never bought any of them though, they look a bit pricey.

If you're after instructions, have a look on Rebrickable. You can make an account and put in what sets you have and it will tell you other stuff to build with the pieces. Often there are alternate builds for a specific set.
