Best car for 20yo new driver, groups 1-4?

DD will be taking her driving test before Christmas and is car shopping now. Her budget for a car + insurance is £3,000 but could stretch to £4,000 at a push. We figure anything under insurance group 4 would be reasonably affordable.

What are the ones to go for/the ones to avoid? I've been told the Honda Jazz and every Fiat in the world are total crap.

She's looking at dealers as they mostly offer a 3 month warranty which imples their cars are halfway decent, but are they just good at hiding faults?

Toyota Aygo. Great little 🚗. We have one for DC1.

A clio is a great starter car. Just get one that is a around the £500 mark as it’s almist guaranteed to get a few minor scrapes etc.

Panda. Even the non-4x4 models are great in bad weather, have good fuel economy, nippy enough for motorway driving etc. I've had a lot of fiats over the years, and never had a problem with reliability or maintenance

Another vote for a Clio. My DS, 18, has one and has had it since before he passed his test. It's an 08 plate and just the most basic model but has been perfect for his first run around and has been very reliable.

Avoid Renault, Vauxhall, Peugeot and Fiat. That is all!

I had a brand new car c1 on lease i was older but my insurance was low. Feel it made me a better driver because i was accountable for any dints etc

She's been out this morning, she's seen a Renault Clio, Toyota Aygo and Toyota i10. All within price range so far. Any horror stories about them?

Avoid Renault, Vauxhall, Peugeot and Fiat. That is all!

Why?

We have owned 4 Peugeots and 1 Renault. Peugeots were all reliable and reasonably cheap to run.
The Renault was a lovely car to drive but its weak spot was the electrics.

DD has a Kia Picanto and is generally happy with it.

CommunistLegoBloc · 13/10/2018 15:49

Do you mean a Hyundai i10? That would be my top recommendation

Kezzie200 · 13/10/2018 15:54

My 8 year old Aygo is now my sons first car. I loved it.

lastqueenofscotland · 13/10/2018 16:04

My Clio is the most reliable car I’ve ever owned. Had it 5 years now, starts every time, drives a dream, flies through its MOT every year. Love it

JC12345 · 13/10/2018 16:11

I had an Aygo that did well over 100,000 miles. Only got rid of it as needed something to fit 3 car seats in. Great car.

Icequeen01 · 13/10/2018 17:14

As I stated above, my DS has a Clio and we have had no problems at all (apart from it needing a new battery last week!). I also had a Clio from new and had it for for 7 year and it was very reliable. I don't understand the don't touch Renault remark.

oopslateagain · 14/10/2018 15:08

Right looks like it's an Aygo or Clio then, thanks all Grin
