Book recommendations for Potter-mad DD

DD (10) is mad about Harry Potter and has read the books multiple times, almost to the exclusion of all other books! I'm keen to get her reading more diversely

If your DC loves Harry Potter books, what other books do they like?

I liked the dark materials but they may be a bit old for her.
The Percy Jackson books are good and are age appropriate.
There is also a series called The silver child’ by Cliffe McNish that I enjoyed but can’t fully recall.

The Spooks series by Joseph Delaney and the Skulduggery Pleasant series. My Potter mad DS has enjoyed both of these.

My son moved onto the septimus heap books, by Angie Sage.

Some brilliant suggestions here - thank you! I hadn't heard of the Silver Child, Spooks or Septimus Heap series, off to check out on Amazon

Has she read The Cursed Child? It’s play format, but DS (also 10) loved it when he’d finished HP. He also realky likes the Alex Rider and Percy Jackson series, and the lesser known Lionboy series by Zizou Corder. It’s not fantasy, it’s set in the dirt if real world underworld. Oh, and Greek and Norse myths.

How about the Ursula le Guin Brinsingamen (sp?) books. Currently bring serialised on R4 Extra.

AnotherPidgey · 13/10/2018 12:04

Maybe not yet but Garth Nix Old Kingdom series (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen) are great. Probably a similar level to the last Harry Potters with a death and zombie type theme. Garth Nix has done quite a lot although I'm not familiar with them.

His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman. Northern Lights is quite accessible. The Amber Spy Glass gets more complex with deeper ideas running through.

Eoin Colfer is good too. Artemis Fowl is a great series.

TBH I like teen fantasy. It's much less dry than a lot of adult fantasy.

Viebienremplie · 13/10/2018 12:04

Thanks Bike another vote for Percy Jackson

She's read the cursed Child a few times as well - basically if it's Harry Potter she'll read it and nothing else has piqued interest...the girl is obsessed!

Pidgey I do think it's the fantasy side that is key for her, but yes, I prefer it to stay books about children/teens for now. It's that tricky time when she's technically capable of reading complex adult books, but obviously not ready for adult concepts.

My DD really loved Nevermoor, which came out last year, and is eagerly awaiting the sequel.

SouthwarkSkaters · 13/10/2018 12:12

Jessica Townsend is the author! Blush

Hidingtonothing · 13/10/2018 12:13

Yes to Nevermore (2nd book due out in November I believe) and also Wizards of Once by Cressida Cowell, there are 2 books so far, hoping there will be more Smile

TimeIhadaNameChange · 13/10/2018 12:30

Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising sequence is fantastic. And, seeing how well it went down with church choir members (my old copy I sent among them somewhere still) I’ll recommend it to you, too!

MissMarplesKnitting · 13/10/2018 12:37

Spooks series

Cressida Cowell's Wizards of Once abd How to train your dragon series (had my son howling with laughter in places). HTTYD isn't as complex but the stories are great, as is the message behind them. Far, far better than the TV/film adaptations.

Percy Jackson

Beast Quest

MissMarplesKnitting · 13/10/2018 12:37

Maybe some Terry Pratchett?

IJustLostTheGame · 13/10/2018 12:49

I second the dark is rising series, I loved those as a kid.
The weirdstone of brisingammon (check the spelling on that one)
When she gets bigger there's the earthsea trilogy
The worst witch books
The deptford mice books, I can't remember who they were by but it was almost Harry potter for mice. I think the first was called the dark portal.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 13/10/2018 12:52

Not sure if they are a little old, but the belladonna johnson books by Helen stringer were equally loved by my potter mad daughter at 13.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 13/10/2018 12:56

Joan Aitken - The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Blackhearts in Battersea
Elizabeth Goudge - The Little White Horse
Lucy M Boston - The Children of Green Knowe (and all the others)

spiderlight · 13/10/2018 13:43

The Charlie Bone series - Jenny Nimmo. She might also like Jenny Nimmo's Snow Spider trilogy.

NotCitrus · 13/10/2018 13:49

Ds is 10 and in the wake of HP has read the Day the World Went Loki, and sequels, the first three Tiffany Aching books by Pratchett, and various tales of Norse mythology including Neil Gaiman's one. Good Omens may also go down well.

UnaOfStormhold · 14/10/2018 08:30

Diana Wynne Jones is brilliant - Charmed life is a great place to start.
