Tipping at the hairdresser

So if a cut and blow dry costs you £35.00, presuming you are happy with the finish, what would you tip?

£5

SinglePringle · 13/10/2018 10:48

Yup, a fiver to the stylist and two quid to the junior for the hair wash.

dulcefarniente · 13/10/2018 10:50

I've never tipped at the hairdressers and I can't remember the last time I saw anyone else do it.

OH really maybe I’m a bit tight I’ve just normally gone with a fiver or less whatever change I have and I’ve never specified I just assumed the hair washer would get 1-2 and the stylist 3-4.

My salon has a box for tips under the counter, and tips are shared out amongst the staff. For a £35 cut & blow dry I give them an extra £5 to put in the shared tips box.

nicebitofquiche · 13/10/2018 11:07

£5. Split between stylist and the hairdresser who is also the owner of salon

SinglePringle · 13/10/2018 11:26

Never assumed they share. I always tip - colourist and stylist get £10 each and I give the junior £5.

MichelleM30 · 13/10/2018 11:26

I think around 10% is the norm. £5 on a £35 cut is rather generous, so def not being tight. It's not a requirement either so don't feel bad and any tip should be appreciated.

cushioncovers · 13/10/2018 11:28

Wow some of these are generous tips.
My hairdresser works from home. I get a dry trim for £12 and give her a £1 tip.

thismeansnothing · 13/10/2018 11:36

I don't tip. I already pay £70-80 for cut and colour. But I take them a bottle of fizz at xmas

redastherose · 13/10/2018 12:05

10% - 12% is a fairly normal amount I think. 10 is obviously easier to calculate but in your example I would tip £5 as well as it's easier to say take £40 😊

DaisyDreaming · 13/10/2018 12:11

Unless they say tips are shared if you tip the stylist they won’t pass any onto the person who washed your hair, and they are normally on min wage

JaiNotJay · 13/10/2018 12:15

Nothing! I don't tip the hairdresser or the junior. I grudge paying their prices as it is, I'm not giving them more money!

rafffy · 13/10/2018 12:17

not all salons share tips. not all stylists share with assistants. a decent stylist will share with their assistant especially if they've been a big help but I would say that if you want your tips to be split then specify at the time of tipping :)

gutrotweins · 13/10/2018 12:18

My hairdresser's so cheap, I willingly give a fiver as a tip.
Cut & BD £20
Cut, BD and highlights £40
She's only about 25, owns her little business and really loves hair dressing!

I worked in a few hairdressers when I was younger. Tips were never shared everyone had their own pot under the counter and the money was put into whoever's pot it was given for.
£5 is also quite a generous tip. £1-£2 was the norm, unless things have changed now.
