ARGH child potentially swallowed some detergent - what to do?

15-month-old hoiked a white shirt that had been soaking in vanish solution out of the washing machine and gave it a good suck before I got it off him 😱. Not sure he swallowed any but he may have done. He’s running around and looks fine in himself- apart from wanting a big drink of water - presumably to get rid of the taste which I can confirm is utterly vile (I tasted a bit to check it wasn’t burny or anything because I’m stupid ). How worried should I be?

Check the advice on the Vanish bottle.

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 13/10/2018 10:20

Why are you asking on mumsnet? Honestly, this is a really stupid reaction. You don't jump onto mumsnet if you think your child has ingested poison. You ring 111 and get proper advice.

NoTeaNoShadeNoPinkLemonade · 13/10/2018 10:22

uum get on the phone to 111 its still a dangerous substance, don't downplay it. I'm not judging btw...I've had a similar incedent with my toddler.
They put the fear in me when I was told how even a little amount of something can be quite dangerous depending on ingredients etc have the container to hand and try to remember ratios

You have ALREADY phoned 111, right?

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 13/10/2018 10:34

Poison can have a delayed effect. Please phone 111 immediately.

Naturistnicola · 13/10/2018 10:35

111 or a&e never, ever take a chance and take the bottle with you.

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 13/10/2018 10:46

I posted while waiting for 111 to answer. Got fed up waiting so am taking him to A&E as that seems to be what they’ll tell me to do anyway. This will be the third A&E visit since he became mobile. His elder brother has never had to go!!

Sounds like child had a huge amount less than previous occasion in 2009, so probably will be fine.

NorthernLurker · 13/10/2018 10:49

I can't believe you didn't go straight to a and e. This is a dangerous substance. Unbelievable.

lljkk · 13/10/2018 11:49

On 2009 thread I posted to, A&E did no treatment. Even though 2009 toddler was thought to have swallowed quite a bit more than OP (100 mil diluted). In 2009 thread, noticeable that nobody harassed OP about WHY didn't she take child to A&E immediately.

Example how MN is harsher nowadays.

lljkk · 14/10/2018 16:55

Any news, OP, what happened?

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 15/10/2018 11:10

@lljkk he was fine, thanks! A&E checked him over and sent us home. He’s very disgruntled that he’s no longer allowed to help with loading the washing machine though...
