Need a good wig shop in London... hair loss related

Have also posted this in S&B but thought I’d try here too for traffic.

I’m getting pretty desperate now... I’ve had a hair loss problem for a long time and for the last 5 years have had an intralace system which has hidden it really well. However the one I currently have is really on its last legs. I don’t want to get a new system as they are incredibly expensive (roughly £2k to have it first done and then £2-300 a month to maintain) and my DH and I want to start a family soon so I just can’t justify spending that amount of money on my hair. I need to get a decent wig asap, but ideally one that will look similar to my system and not be glaringly obvious!

Does anybody have any recommendations for somewhere I could try?

I can't make any recommendations I'm afraid, but IIRC I believe it's traditional that married women who are of Jewish Orthodox faith have to wear a wig for religious purposes. So try Googling 'jewish women's wig shops London'. And it's quite possible that they have other customers, not of the Jewish faith, but who are having to cope with hair loss.

I get mine from Trendco (alopecia sufferer) and they cater for a whole range of budgets and it’s a lovely service in there. Make sure you call and make an appointment.

Thanks @fairiedemon - do they style them as well?

Yes they offer that service but you must book ahead. I can’t comment on how good their styling service is as I get my local hairdresser to do it. If you are ever around Hemel Hempstead I can give you her details. Smile

I went to Trendco when I lost my hair due to cancer and they were very kind and helpful - I think they let me try on just about every wig in the shop!

I know this isn't what you asked (and you probably have more experience with this) but I thought it might helpful too:

They suggested a synthetic wig which was easier to care for but even though it was higher end style it still looked fake. I chose a long blonde style (trying to match my real hair) which might be why - it would get tangled within about 10 minutes of wearing it. I wore it for over a year and it definitely would have needed replacing if I had worn it much longer. So although expensive, I would consider one of their human hair wigs.

Good luck with this and trying for a baby! Hope you find something that you like.

Raoul's in Paddington.
Good luck.

AngeloMysterioso · 13/10/2018 12:59

Thanks for the tip @hypatiently - I used to wear crappy synthetic wigs before I got my system, so I wasn't really intending to return to those dark days unless the real hair ones are crazy expensive!

Sorry that you know the pain already! Flowers

I foolishly thought spending over £300 would be enough but clearly not! At least on the style I chose anyway. I'm sure with your experience you will make a much better and well informed decision. From what I remember, the real hair ones were about £800.

Hi OP, I go to Bloomsbury of London. They do really good clip in systems that don't require the expensive maintenance appointments. You just pay for the system and that's it. They're about £1700 depending on length and colour but last around 2-3 years and are excellent quality.

Falcon1 · 13/10/2018 18:33

Forgot to mention, they make them bespoke to you and style them as well.

Falcon1 · 13/10/2018 18:34

Sorry, another thing! They only use ethically- sourced European hair.

AngeloMysterioso · 13/10/2018 21:37

Hi @Falcon1, thanks for that suggestion. It's probably a bit out of my budget right now but definitely worth thinking about for the future!

The hospital I used to work for had a contract with Raoul's, and the patient feedback was positive. I don't know the specifics of who is entitled to NHS funded wigs and wig maintenance, but it might be worth looking into that.
