Whio's got Audible? Is it worth it?

Just that. I love reading but also love book CDs/tapes and always have one on the go in my car. I think I'd like to be able to walk listening to a story too so am thinking of getting it as a Christmas present from DH.

From what I have read on the website it seems somewhat complicated; really I just want to be able to buy a book to listen to when I want, there seem to be restrictions.

Also, it would be ideal if there was a way to borrow a book to listen to (like at the library but without the hassle of carting round a CD player Grin. Any advice or opinion would be appreciated.

Question time again!

To get Audible subscription do I have to have amazon prime as well?

Thanks

applecatchers36 · 14/10/2018 09:46

No you don't need Amazon prime for Audible subscription.

I found audible was great for maternity leave so I could listen to books while caring for baby, housework etc..it's good if you are in the house on your own for any length of time, excellent for breastfeeding / ironing etc..

Once I returned to work and wasn't home a lot, I didn't use it as once kids on bed would tend to watch TV with DH etc..so I cancelled the subscription then.

I love Audible as well. You can set up a wish list so if you get any recommendations or have anything in mind, it's easy to save those ideas for when you have spare credits.

Also as a PP said if you build up loads of credits/books you can cancel your subscription and they let you keep the ones you've already downloaded, and then you can renew your subscription when you're ready. Really recommend it!

Scribbly I've just started listening to Wives and Daughters as well, it's one of my favourite books anyway but Prunella's reading takes it to another level - especially the dialogue! Brilliant and really good value considering it's so long!

Btw I've heard good things about library audio books as well OP (although haven't got round to trying them myself).

I adore audible, use it all the time on my commute.

Their customer service and returns policy is very good.

If you dislike a book for any reason you can return it. So, you can listen, hate the ending or narrator or whatever, and hand it back for a new credit.

Also, you can have up to four devices on it, so I have one account but my husband and mum also use it.

There’s also a daily deal - I pick up a lot of books for £1.99 this way.

Rascallsall · 14/10/2018 13:24

I learnt to crotchet a couple of years ago and decided I couldn't do that and watch tv. Consequently I joined Audible and absolutely love it. I find the two activities very mindful and relaxing. I agree with the comments above, the daily deals are great if you need for than one book a month and it is super easy to return a book if you don't enjoy the listen. Before purchasing a book you can listen to a 5 minute sample which is very useful as you have to love the narrator as much as the book.

MrsChollySawcutt · 14/10/2018 13:31

Totally addicted to Audible here. It all started when I joined to download the Harry Potter books for DS to listen to and now its my guilty pleasure. I have a list of favourite narrators now.

Always use the subscription credits at 3 fir £18 so books are a max of £6.

pontiouspilates · 14/10/2018 13:33

Sorry to hijack and I may have missed this up thread, but if you pay a monthly subscription are all books then free? I'm just confused about the post saying you can pick up books for £1.99?

Kit10 · 14/10/2018 13:38

Love audible, I don't have the subscription anymore though, they do deals of the day for £1.99-£2.99 I just buy those when one I like comes up and have a stash of them now.

Kit10 · 14/10/2018 13:39

Try your local library too, ours has an online subscription for free.

MrsChollySawcutt · 14/10/2018 13:41

You pay a monthly subscription that buys you a certain number of 'credits' per month. I think it's £7.99 for 1, £14.99 for 2 and so on.

Each book costs a credit, or if you are out of credits you can pay the individual book price in £ (usually hugely expensive) or buy a bundle of extra credits at 3 for £18.

There are also lots of special offers, such as books for £1.99, 2 for 1 deals etc available to subscribers.

ChessieFL · 14/10/2018 13:44

Pontius the monthly subscription gets you one credit (one book) a month. You can buy additional books if you want and there’s a Daily Deal which is usually £1.99 or £2.99.

WheelyCote · 14/10/2018 13:49

I use scribd, same price but you get to listen to as many books as you want
