Going to the Philippines this morning for a conference and school visits. I have, my suit, my dress up shoes, a nice cardigan, three dresses, sandals, three pair shorts, three T-shirts swimsuit in case I’m lucky, enough knickers and brawls for one week. Sorry using dictation, visually impaired. But I think you know what I mean.

iPad, charger, adapter, both pairs of glasses, passport, Dubai money, I will convert pounds this evening when I arrive, sorry tomorrow evening can’t think

for the school visits I have, two-story boxes, a few braille books, a few noisy books, visits are two special-needs school so if I can find some other things for the kindergarten, I will bring them.

For my bag on the plane, I have books in Greek, a few books in English, lots of food goodies since I don’t like plain food,

My presentation will be on foreign languages, I speak nine of them. I have not gotten to finish my PowerPoint and I really wanted to bring some things with me, material that I have used in foreign languages as a blind person, but I can’t think of things right now. I do have a Greek and a Vietnamese braille book here. I might bring them.

Blimey think you have everything covered Grin, that sounds a lot. Pjs or lounge wear? Sounds an amazing trip.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/10/2018 05:32

That sounds like an amazing trip.

I personally always take something cosy to change into on the plane. Something warm and comfortable.

Can you finish your presentation on the plane?

I assume you've got toiletries / make up etc covered.

Have a fantastic trip Op!

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/10/2018 05:40

More than one charger, more than one set of headphones. Knickers in hand luggage. Lip salve, hand cream for the flight.

PowerPoint on laptop, online, stick and anywhere use you can put it! I'm a facilitator and I fix the PowerPoint on the plane. I think well then. Make sure you think through the presentation and think of anything you need.

Oh and flip flops for hotel floors.

Mosquito spray?

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 12/10/2018 05:47

Sunscreen
Insect repellent

Light rain coat
Umbrella

Sounds like an amazing trip. Have fun

DunesOfSand · 12/10/2018 05:49

A light rain coat. I think it's warm and wet there at the moment.
And yes to toothbrush, shampoo and the like.

Have you checked in? Boarding passes if so.

Would the kindergarten like play food? Wood if you can get it in time, but many places sell plastic food.

Imknackeredzzz · 12/10/2018 05:57

You speak 9 languages! Kudos to you! Any tips for learning a language?! .... sorry I know that wasn’t the point of the thread!

SlumberQueenie · 12/10/2018 06:05

Mosquito repellent and anti histamines?

hellokittymania · 12/10/2018 06:42

Thank you, I knew I was missing things! I don’t have any mosquito repellent year, but I will buy it at the airport or in Manila. I’m used to Southeast Asia and I try to wear long trousers in the evening or things that will cover my legs. I will pack long trousers as well. I haven’t learned to put on make up yet, maybe one day, but I have packed the other things.

And as far as learning languages, practice every day, my most recent one has been Greek and I managed to get a high score on the exam and I am currently studying and doing projects there. So the efforts paid off. But the best advice I could give you is use them as much as you can, practice, don’t be shy about speaking to foreigners if you meet one who speaks the language you were learning, watch TV, YouTube, podcast and anything else. I will be specific speaking specifically about the assistive technology visually impaired use with learning languages, and the good points and the disadvantages. I really wish the app Be My Eyes was the multi lingual app, not just for language learning, but because the main language on the app is English, so not everybody can access it. But other apps, do all lingo, websites like yellow bridge for Mandarin, even Siri in other languages can be great. I forgot who’s thread it was, but they mention that Siri tell jokes, so I tested it in French, German, Spanish. Siri is more entertaining in France and England than she is in Germany or Spain. But those are some ways to get into languages.

I might bring some Plato for the kindergarten. The last time we did a weekend for the children, there was only Clay. They like the Plato when I bring it, and I have quite a lot here. Does anyone have any idea if those squishy things will be OK on the plane. It’s a bit hard to describe but I think for children who have sensory needs they are great. But it has like a gel inside. Can I bring them with me?

OP posts:
hellokittymania · 12/10/2018 06:57

This type of thing. I don’t know what’s inside, will it be OK on the plane?

Anyone up and want to run over my packing list with me?

Play dough sorry, using dictation, I don’t think the young children would be very fond of Plato.

BitOutOfPractice · 12/10/2018 07:29

I thought blindly her Greek is good if she's teaching kids about Plato! Grin

DunesOfSand · 12/10/2018 08:11

Play dough and squishies should both be ok in the hold.
Security can get a bit funny about play dough in hand luggage - it sometimes gets included in the liquids and gels limits.

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/10/2018 08:21

You might not be able to take those toys on as hand luggage unfortunately as they might class it as a liquid/gel/paste and then you have to meet the 100 ml rule.

Last time I went through airport security, a man was arguing about a few snow globes that he was trying to take through and they took them off him and bubble wrapped them up to post somewhere.

Meet0nTheIedge · 12/10/2018 08:30

We take a squidgy, gel-filled stress ball on planes for DS, it goes in the clear plastic bag of toiletries for going through security. Playdoh would almost certainly fall into the liquid category too I think.

hellokittymania · 12/10/2018 08:41

I never realize that about Plato. OK I will put it in the luggage.

And as far as Greek goes, I am taking a class in path all a G of disability and neuropsychology, just don’t ask me how much I can actually understand yet. I will get there eventually. But I got quite a high score in the exam at B2 level, which is upper intermediate, so not bad. It’s a very hard language though.
