Weekly shopping bill for family of 4

Probably been done to death by now but can you settle a disagreement with DH by telling me, if you are a family of 4 with 2 primary age kids, how much your weekly grocery shop is?

Ours is usually around £100 a week, then there might be the odd top up of milk etc through the week. My dc are 6 and 3 though so probably a bit younger than yours. As they get older I can see it getting more expensive when they both need packed lunches. At the moment dc1 is in infants so has a school dinner and dc2 is at the childminder.

I do a monthly shop of around £100, meat shop at £40 a month then small shops for fresh stuff at around £30 a week so that works out at an average of around £65 a week. That's for 2 adults and 2 primary school children.

BarbaraofSevillle · 11/10/2018 20:22

You'll get answers between about £50 and £200+, but the national average is around £100.

Obviously you have to work with what you can afford, what food you like, what time you have, how much you eat out etc and what shops you have access to.

I'm guessing your DH thinks you should be spending less, but he has never actually been and bought a full weekly shop himself? And he probably doesn't want you to cut back on the things he likes either?

Last month we spent £416 and we are two adults and two young kids, 11 and 6. This includes all household stuff as well, loo roll, pull ups, washing powder etc as well as food. I am very frugal also, I buy own brand and cheap stuff, shop in ASDA and get all the offers I can.

ladyvimes · 11/10/2018 20:26

£100 including a takeaway and top ups. Cook from scratch and shop at Aldi and local green grocers. Doesn’t include wine, however! Wink

FantastikRik · 11/10/2018 20:40

About £100 per week here as well. 2 teenage DC.

pumpkinpie01 · 11/10/2018 20:43

Today I spent £55 I was very pleased with that, I sorted the freezer out before I went and I always meal plan. Before that I spent £134 a fortnight ago. 2 adults 2 DC.

Stripyhoglets1 · 11/10/2018 21:07

I'd say at least £150 on average - I'd like to be closer to £100 but the kids are teenagers and we do alot more top up shopping now.

ApolloniaVitelliCorleone · 11/10/2018 21:29

I average £150 a week. That’s two teenagers though. It includes everything available in a supermarket so food, drink, toiletries, cleaning products and alcohol. If anything I go over. I cook from scratch and buy a lot of own brands and do click and collect so in control of spend. I always feel a bit inferior when I read these threads as people do it for much less and I think I must be rubbish at shopping or just extravagant. I don’t think I am though when I watch these budget shows on television I follow most of the rules and am shocked at how other people spend. I just think life’s expensive and that it.

fishym2b · 11/10/2018 21:37

On how to eat well for less last week they said £80 was average. This week I've done £60 in Aldi but I will mix it up with a Sainsbury's or Ocado which is generally a fair bit more. Would love to do Aldi every week but it just gets a bit samey.

fishym2b · 11/10/2018 21:39

Oh and both mine have school dinners so no packed lunches included in that. Very rarely have take away, try to cook from scratch. I'm veggie so we have plenty of slow cooker lentils Grin

PersonaNonGarter · 11/10/2018 21:39

£100 not including dog food or take away one night. Two DS 9&11 and very hungry/sporty. That includes all cleaning stuff.

It isn’t well organised. I don’t meal plan or check the cupboards properly - it could be £10 more efficient but we go for speed and convenience. It is boring though - hardly any meat and lots of reliance on pasta and sauces.

Mum2jenny · 11/10/2018 21:42

Totally depends if you buy everything from the supermarket or buy stuff from independents like bread, veg and meat.

I probably spend around £120 a week if you include everything including wine n beer, but I may have other costs at the independents!

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 11/10/2018 21:44

£60-80. Not a family of 4, there’s 6 of us, but the eldest 2 (secondary age) are at their dad’s 2 nights and the youngest 2 have school dinners (infants) so we have the equivalent number of meals to a family of 4!

crosser62 · 11/10/2018 22:01

Between £43 & £53 a week.
No booze, meal plan & very little meat.
2 adults, teenager and little one.

I am very frugal.

Hidethesausage · 13/10/2018 20:33

So we’re about average at £80 week including wine 😁. Yeah as pp said, DH thinks it’s too much. With both of us working though, convenience is king and I can’t bring myself to serve beans on toast or equivalent every night, even though DCs get a hot meal at lunch. I feel this compulsion to feed them a ‘proper’ meal when we get home.
