There’s a moose loose aboot my hoose!

We’ve had mice for a while, bit of success trapping them but they always return. This week I found evidence that one had been in my wardrobe upstairs, chomping on a bar of chocolate left in a handbag (I know, what sort of madwoman lets chocolate stay uneaten in a handbag?) and came down this morning to see droppings on my kitchen worktop.

I googled and found a company called Superproof (a national franchise) who talk a good talk and give a guarantee to get you mouse- free, but they charge over a grand! At the other end of the scale our council will come out for £140 quid. Anyone had good/bad experience with pest control companies that they can share. With a 2 year old touching everywhere and sticking his hands in his mouth I’m keen to avoid him ingesting mouse urine and excrement...but don’t want to pay over the odds.

No friends with good mousers you could borrow? N.b. am now humming the tune your title!! 🐭

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 11/10/2018 12:41

I assumed you had one of these 🦌!
Council pest control worked for us, coupled with filling all gaps around pipes with caulk and putting wire mesh over air ventilation bricks etc to stop them getting back in.

DelurkingAJ · 11/10/2018 12:46

I’ve lent out our much missed champion mouser before...worth a try if you know someone with one? Otherwise would the humane traps work followed by blocking vents etc? We’ve stayed mouse free despite the new cat’s best catch and release live efforts doing this!

Wow, I'd never heard of superproof before. We live in an Edinburgh tenement so I don't know if it's a viable solution in a flat.

We've had hard core poison down which has worked, yet I'm certain I found mouse poo in the living room last night.

teaandtoast · 11/10/2018 12:51

I'd try the Council first. It's a no-brainer at that price.
Have a look at the terms and conditions - will the big company/Council come out a few times if they don't sort the problem straightaway?

Used a bunch of these:

Caught one most nights for a week or two, then no more mice. Did not spend anything like £140 !!

You can borrow this op....

@aprilislonggone Can I borrow him/her please? No mice, but that is a gorgeous cat!

JessieMcJessie · 11/10/2018 13:51

Sadly I am very allergic to cats, a shame as I love them and would happily let one loose on the little critters.

Super proof do say that they will come out immediately for free if you spot any evidence of mice within a year. Our house is Victorian and has quite a few floorboard/skirting gaps but the previous owners had a cat so he probably kept on top of the mouse situation for them.

I lived in a farm property and although we had mice on occasion, we didn't need to pay a grand to be rid of them for a year. Pop a few traps around (google "The Better Mousetrap") and throw out the dead mice every morning. It doesn't take long at all to get rid of them. Stuff wire wool/Brillo pads in any gaps and they can't chew their way back in. We had mice just twice in nearly 10 years.

MorrisZapp · 11/10/2018 14:10

We've been battling them for years despite plugging visible gaps. I've emailed superproof, I'll see what they say.

If indeed they actually can keep mice out of properties permanently, they will become millionaires. I would pay any price for that.

VelociraptorRex · 11/10/2018 14:15

We've just discovered mice in our attic - we've caught one in a humane trap and I've bought a couple of those plug-in deterrents (no idea if they work but for £30 I'm willing to try!). Apparently they keep spiders away too, definite win if they work!

CherryBlossom23 · 11/10/2018 14:39

Any friends with a Jack Russell you could borrow?

JessieMcJessie · 11/10/2018 14:43

Allergic to dogs too CherryBlossom!

oh god my cat brings them in and sometimes loses them

last night i went into the kitchen (light was on) and bold as brass a mouse was sat in the middle of the rug ,then fled into a cupboard

an hr later my son said there was a mouse on the rug and fled behind the washer, feel guilty now but i pulled washer out saw mouse against wall and showed the cat, the cat had it in its mouth within seconds, and ran outside

im just hoping it was the same mouse
