How rare is sleeping through from birth?

lookattheshorts · 11/10/2018 08:23

DS has slept through since the hospital ward on the first night, all the other babies were pissing me off keeping me awake but my little one was sound asleep.

He went from 9pm to 7am. He did the same when we got home.

I just wondered how rare it was. Midwives were all really positive about it, and were happy for me to continue since he had a good birth weight and gained a few ounces in the first week. Also not jaundice, etc.

I've chatted to a few other mums and I was surprised to find others have had similar experiences! So is it really all that rare?

I dared not mention it to anyone sleep deprived though.

My ds did; slept through most nights until the 4 month sleep regression hit and it all went downhill rapidly! Make the most of it; I wish I’d savoured those nights more now!

What pain relief did you have? And are you BF or FF? My DD slept through quite early on but the drugs I was on affected her and she had a bottle of formula before bed. She wouldn’t wake up for a night feed.

All that has changed though now.

ShamelesslyPlacemarking · 11/10/2018 08:29

I’ve literally never heard of it happening to anyone before, either in real life or online before this post.

I wouldn’t have thought babies would be physically possible of sleeping 10 hours without feeding, but I guess I’m not a doctor.

Lucky you if it continues.

Just know it's no reflection on your parenting good or bad in terms of how a baby sleeps. They often seem exhausted after the birth and will sleep for long periods but don't be surprised if that changes.

adonkeysaurus · 11/10/2018 08:30

I was told to wake my daughter at least every 4 hours when she was tiny to feed her, but then she had really poor weight gain at first. At one point I had to wake and feed her every 2 hours, day & night 😴

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/10/2018 08:30

I’ve never met anyone where the baby slept through from birth and it continued OP.

Elementtree · 11/10/2018 08:33

Yup, it's pretty rare. Do all of your friends suddenly have contentedly sleeping babies before or after you tell them that the non sleeping babies were pissing you off in the ward?

lovetherisingsun · 11/10/2018 08:34

I'm sure your neighbours will be "pissed off" with you as well once your little darling starts sleep regressions over the next 5 years. Have never met anyone in RL whose baby slept straight through.

lookattheshorts · 11/10/2018 08:34

Thanks all for the replies. I guess I am really lucky then and should remind DH he doesn't know how lucky he is when DS is being a pain touching everything

But I have had at least two people I know experience similar, although none of them family etc.

DS is almost 1 now. He goes down at 7pm, isn't up until 7.30am/8pm the following day. Will usually go back to sleep if we have a bath together and go back to bed.

All the more reason I'm never having any more DC

I’ve never heard of this before! I’ve always considered myself to have an excellent sleeper and she didn’t sleep through until 7months, but has since barely ever woken in the night and she’s 3. How old is your ds now?

Nutkins24 · 11/10/2018 08:37

Blimey you’re lucky. People always talk about sleep regressions but we’ve never experienced them in this house! Fingers crossed.

Powerless · 11/10/2018 08:37

My DD did and still does

welshweasel · 11/10/2018 08:37

I reckon mine might have, if I wasn’t forced to wake him every 2 hours to feed. I say wake, he never actually woke up properly, I just fed him whilst he was asleep. He slept through from 10 weeks when I stopped waking him up! Went through some hideous regressions at 4 and 10 months and has been great since.

lookattheshorts · 11/10/2018 08:38

Nutkins I had my fingers painfully crossed when he hit 4 months Grin I am so bloody thankful.

I was incredibly anxious about it for the first week or so. I kept making sure he was okay, I did try the odd waking for a feed but he'd look extremely pissed off and not open his eyes.

My midwife came to see us on day 6 and I cried, telling her I was so worried about it since I'd read all the books and everyone warned me for the lack of sleep Confused

She said "Good grief woman, take yourself to bed and enjoy it. He's fine".

She had a two week period where Colic took over but other than that - straight through every night. The very night she was born (born at 00:11) she had a feed and then slept through until 7am and then 7-7 next night and has slept through ever since (bar the Colic period).

Luckily she was never affected by teething either.

Believe me though, she has many other issues!

Lost5stone · 11/10/2018 08:42

I don't know of any in real life either. DD slept through in hospital because of all the drugs I think, she woke up night 2. But was still good and slept through from 4 weeks, had the odd regression for a couple of weeks over the last 2 years.

DollyWilde · 11/10/2018 08:44

Not exactly the same but my little sister slept through the night on her 23 day after birth. Apparently caused a few concerns with the HV but she’s a perfectly normal(ishWink) 26 year old now.

She was also the phantom teen who never left her pit until lunchtime. Her love of sleep is somewhat of a family joke...

partyanime · 11/10/2018 08:45

Mine did thank god as abusive husband would have seen that as something to attack me for not controlling if it hadn't been that way

I didn't have time to wonder if it was rare back then but in hindsight it probably was but you're not completely alone OP

Now in primary they don't always but we're rid of the man so it's not the end of the world when they don't

Justwaitingforaline · 11/10/2018 08:46

DD did, and still does at nearly 4. It’s rare, but not completely unheard of!

If we ever get DC2, I’m sure I’ll get my comeuppance then Grin

lookattheshorts · 11/10/2018 08:47

party Sorry to hear that Sad good riddance to him Thanks

Dolly People joke about me and DS too Blush my mum can sleep for England... also a family joke. I do wonder if it's generic

OP posts:
lookattheshorts · 11/10/2018 08:47

*genetic

Dd slept through from 2 weeks and I thought that was early.
I'm wondering what size you babies were. Dd was 9lb and hv said it was because she was bigger.

Powerless · 11/10/2018 08:49

@Blue My DD was 7lb 9oz

Powerless · 11/10/2018 08:52

My DD is also HF Autistic. Don't know if there's any correlation?
