Boring thread alert! Recommend me apps!

I'm agoraphobic and highly anxious. Getting bored with the games I'm currently playing (storm 8, trivial pursuit based, solitaire, match 3 games)

And looking for something new.

Free or very cheap please.

Considering "Readly", I also enjoy "normal" puzzles - crosswords, logic puzzles, sudoku but yet to find a good app for these.

Have also wanted to learn poker for years!

Also like the idea of colouring apps.

Have been browsing but all the reviews are very similar so hard to choose.

Which ones do you enjoy? And why?

Boring? You really should get away from the idea that games are boring. That's exactly what they shouldn't be - you should be looking for exciting, puzzling, calming, educational, hilarious, frustrating, sad....

Mind you, that's a very old-school selection you've mentioned there... you should definitely try and expand your horizons, at least in games!

I only have iOS, so here's some recommendations. They may or may not exist on Android. I also can't tell how much they are because the app store won't tell me if I've already bought them...

Threes - simple and addictive number game
Alto's Odyssey - one button (nearly) action snowboarding game with gorgeous style and music. I play this constantly. Also Alto's Adventure, the earlier game.
Life Is Strange - one of the best slice-of-life adventure games in recent years
Gorogoa - picture puzzle game of immense joy and surprising complexity
Florence - short but powerful story game
Inside - work your way to the end of a shadowy dystopia
Thimbleweed Park - a sassy character adventure puzzle game
Her Story - solve a murder case from the video snippets of interviews
Desert Golfing - minimal possibly infinite golf game
80 Days - choose your own adventure on a Victorian round the world trip, playing as Passepartout, wonderful writing
World of Goo - construction game where the parts are gooey blobs
VVVVVV - old-school platformer/explorer
Geometry Wars 3 - fast arcade shooty/dodge the bad guys thing
Bastion - action game with amazing music and narration
Carcassonne - the classic tabletop map-building game
Cut the Rope - puzzle game with crocodiles
Broken Age - lush adventure puzzle game with a sacrificial girl and a bored prince
Plants vs Zombies - tactical lane-based battles
Papers, Please - Eastern european state border controller simulator (really!)
Don't Starve - survival in the wilderness
Beat Sneak Bandit - rhythm action game
Final Fantasy XV - the full FF15 game with cuter graphics than the console version
Monument Valley - Escher-styled traverse the puzzle world
Ridiculous Fishing - as it says
Scurvy Scallywags - The best match-three game in the world ever. Really, I mean it.
Escape from Monkey Island (and 2) - the classic Lucasarts pirate adventure games
Alphabear (and 2) - Sort of like Boggle, but with bears
Crossy Road - infinite Frogger
Pac-Man 256 - infinite Pacman
Lume - lovely-looking puzzle game
Phoenix Wright collection - bizarre Japanese lawyer-em-up story/puzzles
You Must Build A Boat - the second best match three game ever
Hatfall - just silly
Neko Atsume - cat collector, set up your garden to attract local cats and take pics of them
Burly Men At Sea - lovely little whimsical adventures
Mario Run - the Nintendo classic done as an infinite runner
Progress - mind-twisting logical puzzle game
Arkanoid vs Space Invaders - what it says on the tin
Million Onion Hotel - sort of like whackamole but much more curious
Pixelgrams - assemble the picture puzzle
To The Moon - heartwrenching story of a woman and her dying husband's last wish
FTL - spaceship tactical battles
Cat Quest - travel the world and hit monsters
Civilization - the Sid Meier civ progression game
Pocket City - urban layout simulator
Reigns (and : Her Majesty) - monarchy decisions and repercussions
Layton's Mystery Journey - simple puzzles wrapped in a bizarre story
Frost - puzzle game persuading swarms of creatures to go the right way
Old Man's Journey - gentle puzzle of moving landscapes so an old chap can be on his way
Framed 2 (skip 1) - move the comic book panels to make the story work out

If there's nothing there that interests you, I have more suggestions.

PhilomenaButterfly · 11/10/2018 04:04

I play City Island and Dream Hospital.

Graphista · 12/10/2018 20:45

It's iOS I have too - got another thread running re my anxiety to update!

Life is strange looks my kinda thing but not compatible with current iOS I'm using would need to do the update first and I'm a bit put off by some of the reviews re cost and that it seems to be a finite game.

Her story - my eyesight and sometimes concentration isn't great and I've been disappointed by other crime solving games where it's basically just "find the hidden clue and tap it" gets boring quickly.

I've looked at some of your other suggestions and I'm grateful you took the time but they're honestly not my thing to be honest.

I was playing storm 8 dream city and really enjoying but they've stopped developing it which is annoying.

City island (building tycoon that the right one?) looks similar and more my sort of thing. Used to play megapolis too.

Dream hospital - can only find dream in the hospital and reviews say doesn't load well

DD recommends Dancing Line.

PhilomenaButterfly · 12/10/2018 20:57

Yes City Island Building Tycoon is the right one.

whereiscaroline · 12/10/2018 21:04

@SpoonBlender thanks for all the recommendations - just downloaded Thimbleweed. Your list of games all look right up my street. Thanks (and sorry to derail OP)!

AckYourHole · 12/10/2018 21:20

@SpoonBlender can you please recommend a calming game? Thanks for this thread Op I'll becwatching with interest

SpoonBlender · 13/10/2018 00:54

@AckYourHole I’ll try! I use Alto’s Odyssey a lot for calm, though it has its moments of frustration. Burly Men at Sea. Monument Valley (and 2). Desert Golfing. Neko Atsume. Samorost 3. Hidden Folks. Pixelgrams. Blek. Old Man’s Journey. Eloh. Flower.

Those cover a truckload of types and genres, and of course some you may not find soothing depending on how you react to flavours of challenge, but all are worth a look at the App Store page at least :)

SpoonBlender · 13/10/2018 01:02

Re updating - jfdi. iOS 12 is faster and slicker than older ones. Take a backup first, either iCloud (totally worth spending the 99p/month for space) or iTunes. That’ll allow you to recover from any possible update fail - which are few and far between.

Her Story is almost the perfect opposite of the ‘tap the clue’ genre. I tend towards the more subverted games, genre-bending and delightfully surprising are more my thing. You really should try Scurvy Scallywags since you’ve enjoyed match-3, and Alphabear for wordpuzzles.

SpoonBlender · 13/10/2018 01:11

Oh! @AckYourHole Stardew Valley is coming to iOS in a couple of weeks, add that to the list - I imagine it’ll need an iPad to play really though.

AckYourHole · 14/10/2018 14:11

@SpoonBlender you star. Much appreciated Grin
