What vaccines have you had and did you react to any? Tired after flu shot

I'm so tired today after the flu jab yesterday! My bones feel like lead. Appetite seems dull too.

It got me thinking - what vaccines have you had as an adult, and how did you feel afterwards? I know I need to get a tetanus shot as not had one for about 25 years, and my MMR didn't work as a child or wore off, so gp advised doing it again.

Then there are the more exotic ones for travelling. Yellow fever seems to be quite commonly required, but Japanese encephalitis quite rare to get?

That reaction is common to all vaccines and medications administered intravenously. I don't generally have much of a reaction to flu vaccine, but do to one med I get IV every 8 weeks. It's not a cause for concern.

VenusClapTrap · 10/10/2018 20:22

I don’t think I’ve ever had a reaction to a vaccination. I’ve had all the usual ones plus some ‘holiday’ ones for far flung destinations over the years.

I've had all the routine ones, plus annual flu jab.

I sometimes ache a bit afterwards, but that's about it.

legolimb · 10/10/2018 20:26

I haven't had a flu jab - but I have heard that it can make you feel like you have a mild dose?

I did have a vaccination against typhoid many years ago. I felt really odd - my pupils dilated and I felt dizzy and spaced out. Had to go home from work and go to bed. Didn't get typhoid on my travels though so all was well.

NorthEndGal · 10/10/2018 20:27

The only shot that gave me symptoms was the polio vaccine, made my arm really sore for a week.
Never had an issue with any others, and I get my flu shot every year

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 10/10/2018 20:28

royalton I would imagine your GP meant that the flu vaccination does not cause flu symptoms (lots of people seem to believe it is a "small dose of flu"). The vaccine can cause mild side effects though (and very rarely more serious ones, of course).

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 10/10/2018 20:29

legolimb it's not a live vaccine so it's not any sort of flu, but the typical side effects include aching muscles, being tired etc. which are obviously very similar to flu and other bugs.

Fatted · 10/10/2018 20:29

Royalton, I thought the whole point of vaccines were they give you a small does of the illness to trigger a response from your immune system. Surely that would leave you feeling differently to usual?

I've felt unwell, similar to the cold, after a flu jab before now. Any other vaccines I can't really remember. Most of the recent ones I've had have been while pregnant or just after a c-section when I wasn't really feeling my best any way!

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 10/10/2018 20:29

I had a full adult dose of Typhoid vaccine aged 12 and I've never felt so ill as I did the day after that. Raging temp. It was a live vaccine though and I was given too much.

Yellow fever was fine. Hepatitis was a fucking massive needle in my arse Grin

Never had anything after a flu jab and I have one every year. It's inactive so you should be ok after that.

Racecardriver · 10/10/2018 20:31

@WhatWouldLeslieNopeDo I read that as anal flu jab.i got so confused I tried to look it up BlushGrin

OP. The only reaction I have ever had was to men c as an 8 year old. Very very bad bruise that lasted weeks and we very large and painful.

Oddcat · 10/10/2018 20:33

The flu jab isn’t given intravenously .

I had cholera and typhoid jabs when I was 14 - felt like I was going to die .

startingafresh1 · 10/10/2018 20:33

Typhoid made me feel rubbish the next day and my arm was very very sore. I think that's normal for typhoid vacc though.

No reaction from flu jab. I don't think all vacs give you a 'small dose' depends on the makeup of the vacc.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 10/10/2018 20:33

Shock thankfully not Racecardriver Grin

Topseyt · 10/10/2018 20:35

I had my annual flu jab today. I've never had any not noticeable reaction to them. I was given a pneumonia one today too. Never had that one before, but so far all OK

I think the only vaccines I ever really had any side effects to were rubella (long time ago, when I was 13) and typhoid, which I had to have for going abroad, also as a teenager.

AbsentmindedWoman · 10/10/2018 20:38

Laughing so much at anal flu jab, it's like a particularly awful porn title Grin

Yeah, no I didn't think I had flu from the vaccine, just surprised at being so tired. Arm hurts a bit if I lean the vaccine spot against stuff.

But apparently it means the body is earnestly producing the antibodies so is a good thing really!

No reaction to the flu jab but I did have to have an MMR booster after my first DD was born and I got a truly horrific measles rash plus extremely high temp, I was a wreck for 2 days!

MissisBee · 10/10/2018 20:44

I always get an impressive local reaction to the flu jab - big red swelling on my arm. Not much in the way of flu symptoms thankfully. Get a really sore arm with tetanus - each one worse than the one before.

Sunshinegirl82 · 10/10/2018 20:47

I had the flu jab yesterday and have definitely been achy since last night, I imagine it's just a symptom of my body's immune response. Obviously I'd rather be a bit achy for a couple of days than have flu so I'm fine with that!

The flu vaccine isn't live so it can't cause you to get flu but I wouldn't have thought its unusual to feel a bit off as it must trigger an immune response? Same with any vaccine I guess!

thinkfast · 10/10/2018 22:28

I get a flu jab every year. I get a mini flu for about 2 days afterwards. This year's was particularly bad. It's a known side effect.

Nonomore2 · 10/10/2018 22:44

I got a very sore arm after Typhoid.
I had Japanese E- that made me feel very sick immediately after.

As an aside, the flu vaccine had 12.2% efficiency in 2017-2018

I always have the flu jab, never noticed side effects before, but this year's also made me feel incredibly tired for a couple of days. Very weird!
