Did anyone go to the BTS concert last night?

Was it good? And how bad was the journey home? I'm taking DD and her friend this evening - they are very excited. I went up to the O2 yesterday morning to get the lightsticks (£45 - pisstake!) as we are a bit rushed to get there after school and even at 10am it was manic with huge queues for general admittance and the merchandise queue was full so had a queue for the queue Grin. Madness! Anyway it was supposed to finish at 10 and DD said last night it finished at 11 so it will be very tight getting to London Bridge in time for the last train. Was the tube station packed with long queues? I don't think I'll be able to drag them out of the concert a few minutes early tbh.

I work in a school and it’s the quirky girls who are into Anime and the hunger games who are obsessed by them.

LOL. Millions of teenagers around the world are obsessed with Anime. It hardly makes you quirky.

batshite1 · 14/10/2018 08:50

They were good at dancing & I could imagine they would put on a good show. I just found their aesthetic quite odd as other posters said they did look very mannequin like. I know surgery is pretty normalised in Korea but wow it’s a lot!

KingSeokjin · 14/10/2018 09:09

No, her friends are not just 15 year olds, in fact most of them are much older!

I’m not going to waste anymore time discussing this with you, you don’t know their names but you think that you most definitely know they’ve had plastic surgery!

You really have no clue about ARMY and how they go over every aspect of BTS so yes I’ve seen photos of each member from when they were babies! It’s incredible and a little bit scary in fact!

I’m not taking about the tweets that said they were a bit shit, of course I’m not! I was talking about the ones that were much worse than that!

I know it’s a million times worse in Korea! However there are polls after polls and it’s actually people in their 30’s and 40’s who like BTS the most!

Like I said people have their opinion and I have mine, when I saw them in the flesh they did not look plasticity at all or mannequin like.

They’ve also not long received an award from the president, the order of cultural merit, they are the youngest to receive it and the first group.

They’ve also been asked to accompany the president to a friendship concert in France.

batshite1 · 14/10/2018 09:14

Jesus, people take fandom way too far these days. I’m mean I was massively into TT in my teens but my level of commitment involved some concerts, posters on my wall & the odd concert tee.

Loraline · 14/10/2018 09:26

Wow £45 for those lightsticks? That's extraordinary exploitation.

At least when Coldplay did similar, centrally controlling the lights etc. they gave the lights to everyone going into the gig for free!

alwayslearning789 · 14/10/2018 09:37

I hear and am with you @KingSeokjin.

Best let the stats and the numbers do the talking.

BTS bring a lot of joy to a lot of people. Just saying...

KingSeokjin · 14/10/2018 09:50

Thank you @alwayslearning789

ARMY are an incredible group of people from all backgrounds and ages, they aren’t rabid or crazy like they’ve been described as nor are they just teenage girls, there were all sorts at the concert and it was amazing!

They (we) do defend BTS but only when people are saying bad things about them.

And I’m not some teenager, I’m actually a 32 year old mother of two!

Loraline · 14/10/2018 09:53

You've got to admit the £45 lightsticks are pretty cynical though. Nice line in profit for them that's for sure.

Urbanbeetler · 14/10/2018 09:58

Just had a look on YouTube - never heard of them before. I like the look. Shows boys can be femme.

SelinaMyers · 14/10/2018 10:00

£45 is a lot- we went to Taylor Swift and got something similar for free though the girls giving them out did say “These are a gift from Taylor” which I found pretty cringe.

icouldbewrongicouldberight · 14/10/2018 10:05

“LOL. Millions of teenagers around the world are obsessed with Anime. It hardly makes you quirky.”

Yes I know. But the one’s I am aware of in my library are also the ones who like anime (as in books) and are quirky. I don’t see the ones who aren’t coming in for the books.

Slowslowlavaflow · 14/10/2018 10:36

Thisisthefirststep - you sound very angry. You live in Korea. Has a Korean man broken your heart or are you into some other band I.e. Exo, and bringing BTS hatred onto Mumsnet?!
You sound extremely negatively opinionated about a group of 20 something boys working their arses off to make a life for themselves and in the process bringing a lot of happiness to millions of people young and old. Yes. Fans range in age from teens to those old enough to be their parents. I am not necessarily a fan, but enjoy their music and just like KingSeokjin have seen the positive effect they have on those who listen to their music and in turn like their message.

The Graham Norton performance was lacking. But if you watched the show you would know one of the boys had stitches in his leg after an accident in the live 02 Arena show and another pulled a muscle during rehearsal at Graham Norton show and therefore could not perform. The usually powerful performance was lacking for this reason as their normal routine was dropped. They were near the end of a long sold out tour and despite being battered and clearly broken, came out smiling and upbeat. YouTube BTS Idol on Jimmy Fallon or just BTS in general on AMA, Billboard Awards, Ellen, Jimmy Kimmel, MAMA Awards etc to see their full performance.

About being plastic. When most of us have men for whom using a facewash, wearing some aftershave, and applying moisturizer daily is a huge skincare effort, of course these boys will look out of the ordinary. They wear makeup. That's it. They are already beautiful boys, which you don't see everyday, and then on top of that they wear makeup. It is out of the ordinary. I don't see plastic. The most altered feature on east asians are the eyelids. They all have their typical east Asian monolids. Not to be biased, I will admit that one boy does seem to have had his nose done, the reason for which I do not know. It could have been cosmetic or medical, and certainly nothing to bash him on calling him plastic. There is no reason to assume any of the others have done any work, as they do look the same throughout childhood and up to now. The only difference is hair and makeup which is part of the visuals.

So many artists want to collaborate with these boys. They are talented and have a huge following. Not niche at all. They have more fans than the big names. It is not largely anime related, thats for sure, although that does not mean it is not in part an influence in the attraction. Who knows.
I speak Korean although am not Korean, but you would not need to, as there are subtitles/captions to all their music videos and even live performances. Lots of meaningful lyrics and some not so meaningful. It is what it is. But what is clear to anyone who has watched more than Friday night's Graham Norton show, is that these are talented young men who write and produce their own music and have a hand in creating all that we see and hear from them. They currently have a message of loving yourself and speaking your mind, for which they did that speech at the UN. Thisisthefirststep , you are currently speaking your mind which I commend you on, but maybe you should love yourself a bit more and in turn your values might be such that you can direct your hatred at a more worthwhile cause, than a group of very humble young men who I very much doubt would speak a negative word against you, even if they knew you were speaking negatively against them.

On a different note, haters will be haters, just like fans will be fans, and these boys have a lot of both. From what I know, they have been sent death threats, and xenophobic and homophobic messages are everywhere online about them. Sadly, that is par for the course when it comes to fame.

We all can choose what we like and don't like. But let's not be so ugly. Mumsnet can be such a sad place sometimes. Let's just all love a bit more.

KingSeokjin - I have a younger sister who loves these young men and their music has given her a sense of direction in life she was lacking a bit before. All the best to your daughter.

Titsywoo · 14/10/2018 11:23

Not sure why this thread has gone so negative by some but I guess we all have our own opinion! For my daughter it's been great. She had a hard time for the first couple of years at secondary school - socially shut out by her whole form she found some friends elsewhere and got into kpop. The army thing has been great as she finally feels included and has made friends through it and her best friend from out of school became a fan too. Her severe anxiety and the start of self harm stopped when she became a fan. All teens want to be part of a group and this way she is. Quirky? Who gives a shit? I like the fact that something that 20 years ago would be impossible to comprehend (7 Asian boys, bit feminine looking, in no way "bad boy", who barely speak english, becoming big in the West) is no big deal to our kids. My dd and her friend have been teaching themselves korean which I think is pretty cool.

I just watched them on Graham Norton- seemed like their concert would be good lots of showmanship.
You can’t take people not liking a boyband personally. I was obsessed with the Jonas Brothers until my early 20s- everyone always took the piss out of them. If you like it, you like it. People will always try and make you feel small for liking it.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/10/2018 13:36

Their “rapping” isn’t amazing, it’s shit.

But they are harmless, so it’s pointless taking a pop at them.

hellokittymania · 14/10/2018 13:52

I prefer 2NE1 and some other Korean groups. I have no idea about BTS until yesterday when I saw they were playing in London.

I have had my head in Greek music all year though, so missed out on a bit of the Asian stuff. But I have worked for several years in southeast Asia and not known about BTS. Unless maybe I've heard some songs and just didn't put them to that group.

headache898 · 15/10/2018 09:09

Well I'm hooked and I'm in my 40s! I was curious about them because of the recent publicity. Watched graham norton and I thought they were brilliant.i'm of Asian descent - born here - and growing up I disliked the canto pop stuff that my cousins were into. I also had no interest in x factor shows etc etc. Was totally unimpressed with backstreet boys/1 direction...I'm actually into indie music! BUT these guys ARE different in some way. There's something really special about them. I can see y they are the biggest boy band and have cracked the states. I think they're amazing!
