Why the fuck do people steal pens!?

It does my fucking nut in!

I go to work with two...often come home with one & end up chasing it down to someone in First Aid the next day who is happily using it.

I take a flamin' pencil case to Rainbows and Guides so I have everything I might want. One of my other leaders literally brings herself...every week...borrows a pen...and makes it disappear ffs...& then when I ask about it says "oh yes, so I have" but they never re-appear.

I'm down to one pen now.

& yes, I know they're cheap as chips, but ffs BUY YOUR OWN BLOODY PENS! I buy the ones I buy specifically because I struggle to write with some shapes of pen (circular ones in particular I'm a fussy fucker)

I buy DH a box of biros on average once every 2 months for him to take to his workshop. I genuinely don't know what he does with them!!
I'm left handed and have a few odd shaped pens that make writing easier for me, unfortunately DS is also left-handed so all my lovely pens have made their way to school, never to be seen again :(

lucysmam · 10/10/2018 16:50

Haha, I posted in a huff this morning because the only pen I have left is the one that makes an annoying clicky/shaky noise when you write with it & I had to endure it at work.

I think the solution is just to keep my pen in my pocket, it's just bloomin' annoying when they're absorbed into general service rather than coming back. I buy lots of pens but often they don't suit the way I write and it can end up looking like a 5yo has filled in the accident book or register or whatever I've written.

I haven't written with a fountain pen for years though, that might be worth trying again maybe. I don't think I've seen mine for a long time though.

Do your workplaces not buy the pens? Just curious, we always have a cupboard full of them.

Mind you I am an accumulator. I often get called to reception to deal with someone and accidentally walk off with a pen. But then I've left them there odd times / gave them away. It's nbd. I wouldn't let someone use a 'favourite' pen if I had one anyway, that's what the 12p bics are for.

FriedEggs1 · 10/10/2018 17:10

Hi OP. Did you ever watch The League of Gentlemen?! 😄

Haha PeppaP you beat me to it 😂

PanamaPattie · 10/10/2018 17:24

If anyone asks “Can I borrow your pen”? My response is “No”. Simple.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/10/2018 18:07

I steal pens, I dont do it on purpose. I borrow a pen then put in down and forget to take it back.

I am the same as Bunny (Above)

I emptied my bag the other day - there were 17 pens 2 of them were mine.

If someone one lends me an expensive pen, then they always get it back - I'm like a cat on hot bricks until I return it - I'm terrified i will forget an steal it with meaning to. All I can think is "OmigodthispenmusthavecostapacketImustgetitbacktoitsownerNOW!"

A cheap pen, I tend not to even think about Cheap ones don't even register on my radar.

Hassled · 10/10/2018 18:13

I agree the only solution is a fountain pen - people are scared of them. I don't even really like using them but I do because it's the only way I know I'll still have a pen at the end of the day.

Eminybob · 10/10/2018 18:20

When I was a waitress, I bought myself a lovely fancy pen, as I used it so often I thought I may as well have a good one (this was in the Olden Days when all orders were handwritten and taken to the kitchen). I used to also hand it over to customers to sign their credit card recipt (yep, back before chip and pin too) and Ken bloody Barlow off Corrie tried to steal it from me! As if he couldn’t afford his own pen! He wasn’t the only one either. I’m was a poor waitress, please don’t steal my fancy pen.

Iamapenstealer · 10/10/2018 18:21

Walk past a desk, need a pen, use the pen, and always forget to give it back. Everyone knows if they are missing a pen to check my desk GrinGrin no one will lend me a posh pen, don't know why 😇😂

Orangecake123 · 10/10/2018 18:55

If I lend a pen I bug the person until it's returned even if it#s a bic pen, because it's my bic pen.

Then I also keep my nice Muji/ fountain/ fine liner pens at home. Grin

TroysMammy · 10/10/2018 20:10

I keep nice pens that no longer work. My favourite one lights up and flashes different coloured lights.

Pissedoffdotcom · 10/10/2018 20:12

Oh god i'm that person 😱 i seem to acquire pens from everywhere i go because i borrow them & then wander away clicking them or tapping them. But i am very VERY territorial about my own pens, especially my favourites 😂

QwertySmalls · 10/10/2018 20:15

Pens are like oyster cards, I never buy them but I always have one.

VenusClapTrap · 10/10/2018 20:36

Pens are like hedgehogs. They need to roam. You can’t own them, they just visit for a while before moving on.

CrabbityRabbit · 10/10/2018 21:09

I used to teach English. PE teachers used to ambush me in the corridor and rob my pens because they knew I always had at least one on me. Angry

I used to buy cheap crappy pens to give out to colleagues and kids and kept them in a separate pencil case. Useful as the packs had one red pen and ten blue/black so I always had a marking pen.

I now work in an office and have naice purple pens that I use for everything from client meetings to rough notes. My colleague used my pen to write me a message the other day after answering my phone. He commented how nice my pen was to write with. He was fixed with a very beady eye and threatened with unspecified nasty things if it went walkabout.

The only person allowed my naice pens is my Granny who gets 10% of the pens out of the boxes I buy.

dudsville · 10/10/2018 21:25

Anyone what like to use a pen until it's empty? I hate when I'm deprived of this joy!

bakingdemon · 10/10/2018 21:31

I buy my own for work as my writing is illegible in the crappy stationary cupboard biros but nice in those rollerball type pens. I used to keep my pens in a pot on my desk. And they always disappeared. So now I have to keep them locked in my drawer.

gnomeathome · 10/10/2018 21:49

Get one of these....

I've realised during the course of this thread that people don't chew pens anymore. It's years since a I saw a manky chewed up pen. It used to be commonplace. I bet no-one walked off with those.

BertieBotts · 10/10/2018 22:40

Smokers tend to chew pens and fewer people smoke.

I'm always trying to use empty pens, I hate it. I should just buy some pens, to be fair.

aliphil · 10/10/2018 23:16

There's one man in my choir who people always ask to borrow pencils from. He got fed up with them going walkabout, so now if you ask him for a pencil he'll hand you one he's used till it's about 5 cm long. Workable, but no one wants to keep it!

Fluffyears · 10/10/2018 23:53

Leave my pens alone! I have a selection that work for me. My dickhead manager used to always fuck off with my pen. I’d ask for it back and be made to feel petty.

HerRoyalNotness · 10/10/2018 23:55

You need some of these far kew. I have my eye on the “not today Satan” Pen
