Do you take your kids to nursery with a cold?

DS has just started Wednesday and he's come down with a cold yesterday he's still asleep snoring he sounds blocked up still.

Shall I just leave him to rest?

Not sure what the protocol is as my Mum use to drag me in even if I was dying!

Yes, if they were fairly perky.

Toddlers have endless colds. If they didn’t go in with one they’d never have attended.

If they are miserable it’s a different story.

My son attends a nursery school every morning for 3 hours. The owner said “fine if he has a cold” but not if it is green!! So that’s my rule.

Don’t young children get about 10 colds a year in their first couple of years as they have to build up their immunity to fight off the most common strains?

Don't take him to nursery. Let him rest!

I never wake a sleeping/poorly child for nursery but I would for school.

welshweasel · 10/10/2018 07:49

Mine goes to nursery unless he’s vomiting, has diarrhoea or a fever that doesn’t come down with calpol. But then I need it for childcare so perhaps a bit different. If he stayed off with a cold he’d never be there!

MrsRhettButler · 10/10/2018 07:50

If he wakes up of his own accord in time to go in then I'd still take him as long as he didn't have those 'eyes' (you know the ones where you can tell they're quite ill)

MrsRhettButler · 10/10/2018 07:50

Yes, obviously assuming it's not impacting your work

ohgiveitadayoff · 10/10/2018 07:51

He's been up few times in the night crying I can't believe he's still asleep.
I'll just leave him then I guess I'm going to be home anyway.

If he is perky, then yes. Ds had pretty much every bug for the first year st nursery. Hideous when trying to balance work though. If you’re at home, I wouldn’t wake him though.

Nitrostormi · 10/10/2018 07:56

I used to let my ds stay home if he had a cold.

kaytee87 · 10/10/2018 07:58

I wouldn't wake for nursery but I'd take if dc was up and happy enough. It's not on our nurseries list of illnesses that they exclude for.

BiscuitsAndGravy · 10/10/2018 08:09

He probably picked up the cold at nursery anyways, so yes I'd take him if you need to work. But if you can afford the time off, then stay home with your DS.

GoodbyeSummer · 10/10/2018 08:11

If they're fine in themselves, i.e. they're not overly tired, no more whingy than normal and haven't got a high temp, then I always send them in. If I kept them off every time they're a bit snotty or sneezy they'd never be there.

CountessVonBoobs · 10/10/2018 08:12

He will probably have a cold continuously for most of the next five months. Do you not need to work?

DonnaDarko · 10/10/2018 08:16

If he's happy, he goes in. If he's been up half the night and /or really tired in the morning, he might still go in but we will warn the staff that he's very sleepy. If he seems really upset, then we will usually keep him home. Unfortunately we both work full time and havent been in our jobs long so we can't take a lot of time off!

ohgiveitadayoff · 10/10/2018 08:19

@CountessVonBoobs no I'm at uni and only studying at home today so it's fine.

Apart from the time she could do no more than sit under a blanket, sneezing, DD went in. She invariably perked up once she got there. A few times I let her sleep until she woke up naturally and took her in a bit late if I was working from home and could manage that.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 10/10/2018 09:22

I wouldn't wake mine because if they're sleeping past 6am it's a fucking miracle and/or they're actually poorly but generally just for a cold we all crack on as normal.

verite · 10/10/2018 09:29

My DD had a cold constantly for first 6 months of nursery. As long as no temperature or seeming obviously unwell I would still send her in. But I used it for childcare so bit different.
